Shifter Bushings
**NOTE*** This is for the Auto Shifter - not the 5 Speed.
If you have side to side slop in your shifter - the bushings are bad. The bushings themselves are made of nylon and deteriorate over time. Once I got to mine - there was nothing left but blue dust from the old bushings disintigrating.
To get to the shifter pivot bushing, you have to remove the entire center console including the radio and climate control. The shifter mechanism is held in by 4 bolts that attach it to the trans tunnel. You also have to detach the shifter arm under the car that goes to the trans - this is held in by a small spring clip. The shifter assembly should now come out. The bushings are on a shaft that is held in by a bolt and a lock nut - unscrew this clean off the shaft and replace the bushings - there is one on each end.
While I was in there I also replaced the rubber boot that seals the shifter from the elements - mine was torn.

You can get aftermarket bushings too, but some have reported a bit of notchiness with them...

did this for my sc400 an the car is tighter the gears change without all the clunking an it appeared to make car sit higher in my case. ended up having to adjust my seat also cuz of the new angle

know its an older thread but thought i'de update since the info really helped me out.
the new toyota part number for the bushings is 90385-11003 they are still just $1.40 though
the boot part number is the same(33555-24060) but its 39.90 and its on backorder
