Default Alternator Rebuild ($60)

Well, I had the power steering pump go out. Tried to catch it ASAP, but I couldn’t save the alternator regardless. I think with over 100,000 miles what fluid got onto it was just enough to finish it off. Anyway, I got it rebuilt for $60! Yet to see how it performs in the long rung, but it’s installed and working atm.

If you’re in the Oklahoma City area – the guy that did my rebuild is a really nice super Christian – honest seeming old man. J. C. Brown Rebuilders 405-235-6559

I kept the thing that he pulled out. I’m actually not entirely sure the name of the part, but it’s the culprit in the burn outs. You can clearly see where the copper colored part is almost worn off to the point of what I assume leads to the grounding and burn out. I took a few high rez pics – not very sharp, but I haven’t seen any here yet:

great pics!!!

my old alternator had also 90000 miles and i decided instead of laying around i could fix it and found out that my main axle looks exactly the same like yours: --> half of the upper copper ring is gone completely down to the iron.

question: you got all the inside which is shown on the pic exchanged for 60 dollars against a new one, right? i mean thats almost 3/4 of the whole alternator...

keep me posted. i want to fix mine too.

He fixed the whole thing for $60. Cleaned it up and installed the new part. I was very pleased. I got to keep the stock alternator and basically had it rebuilt to what seems to be nearly good as new. To be clear – yes, that is the old part that he replaced. I’m not sure what the parts are called, but he installed a new one of those.

I would guess a comparable replacement would be at least $200.
