Default Too much engine/transmission noise from console area--revised

Just purchased a 95 sc400. LOVE IT! White-tan, 95k miles.

There is more engine/transmission/starter noise coming through the console area than I expected.

I learned that there is a grommet kind of a seal somewhere on the cable connected to the shift linkage. I removed the upper parts of the console, but couldn't readily see the seal. I did not yet try to remove the shift linkage to see if the cable/seal is directly underneath it. Does anyone know if I get to the seal from above or below?

Thanks in advance.
