Default SC4 Tranny questions

Ok before you yell at me to search. I did, I sorta got my answer between searching and intellexual.net but I'm still unsure about the answer.
I just wanted to know if the SC400 transmissions were the same between 92-97. I know that the 98+ had 5-spd autos and the 92-97 were 4-spd auto. But I don' t know if the 92-97 are interchangeable. The only reason I ask such a question is that I need to buy a "new" tranny for my 94 SC4 because mine died.

Toyota has used this family of trans for a long time. My buddy has a 84 Supra that has an early version of this automatic. even the 5 speeds are the same family of automatic transmision.
I don't know if they are 100% the same, but It can probably be made to work very easily.
Hope this helps

I think it's been done before but it's expensive (gated shifter assembly, tranny, custom work) . The 5 spd auto was meant for the VVT-i engine so I don't know if it's the best idea. But you can find the thread where someone did it already.

The thought of having a 5-speed auto with a gated shifter sounds great (and tempting) but I don't think it's possible... from what I've read on many posts on here.

But that idea is awesome. Remember that even the JDM Soarers never came with a 5-speed auto transmission... mmm.... 1JZ VVTi with 5-speed auto
