Default A/C died?

So, I was driving my SC300 the other night and it was all dandy. It had been raining hard all day but the a/c was working fine. Then all of the sudden my a/c light starts blinking and my a/c just dies.

Now, I read some threads and they said my compressor or clutch or something died but this is the thing I don't get...my a/c was ****ing cold in high 90 degree temps right up until it died.

So, I turn it off, dont think much of it and then the next day start the car up, turn the a/c on. It starts to blow cold and then the a/c light blinks and it dies again. So, I turn it off again.

Anyways later i'm driving back to college the next day, its an hour and a half drive. I leave the a/c on full blast. Doesn't blow cold air, but any air is better than none and the SC sucks with windows open at high speeds. About halfway through the trip the a/c suddenly starts to blow cold for like 5 minutes. And then dies. And then like 20 miuntes later it comes back for 10 minutes and dies. It does this for the rest of the trip and then it finally dies again.

I really have no idea what's wrong. I just got my freon recharged about a month ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So it's definitely compressor even though it sometimes works intermittantly? Not maybe a relay or somethin?

I have another question then too if it is the compressor. Will a MKIV TT compressor work?

the $75 doesn't come with clutches, so it is worthless.

the $229 one is pefect.

Yes, it COULD be a relay or wiring problem. The fact that it blows cold when it does work means that your compressor did NOT blow up. If it did, you'd hear a nasty sound for a short bit before the compressor is shut back off and the A/C light blinks.

You appear to have a clutch or electrical problem, which is why the A/C light blinks. This is a diagnostic of the system. The light blinks because the A/C clutch has power applied and the compressor is supposed to be rotating, according to an internal shaft sensor, but it's not rotating.

Pop the hood, start the car and turn on the A/C. Look at the compressor and see if the center part of the clutch (compressor input shaft) is turning. If not, get somebody else to turn off the A/C, then turn it back on, so you can watch the compressor. If the clutch never engages, you have a clutch problem, not an internal compressor problem.

With a wiring diagram of the A/C circuit, you can check for voltage at the compressor connector (with a DVM) and verify that the clutch is indeed getting full voltage. If so, it may be worn and either needs replacing or, if possible, adjusting (the gap).
