Default DIY: How to Install an AEM 1101 EMS into OBD-1 SC300

The following is what I had to do to install the 1101 AEM EMS (Speed Density) on my 1992 SC300 5-speed that AEM did *NOT* cover in their instructions. So this is all supplemental to the install instructions provided by AEM.

For the record, the 1101 box is NOT plug and play for this application. More like plug and play with your soldering iron.

Some of my sensors you may not want to use so substitute as you see fit. Wiring should remain the same.

MAP Sensor: GM 3-Bar
Part Numbers:
GM P/N: 12223861
Aftermarket P/N: D21 213 101
Pigtail P/N: KEM 350 259

Wiring:
Pin A: Ground (brown wire) (E)
Pin B: Signal (yellow/green wire) ECU Pin 66B-->62B (KS)***
Pin C: +5V Reference (blue/red wire) ECU Pin 41B (VC)

***Move signal wire Pin 66B (MAF Input - obsolete) to Pin 62B (MAP Input) on the ECU connector. This saves you from running a separate wire into the cabin by just using the old MAF input wire.

Intake Air Temperature Sensor:
Part Numbers:
Aftermarket P/N: KEM 139 202
Pigtail P/N: KEM 148 018

Wiring:
Polarity doesn't matter:
Brown Wire ECU Pin 65B (E2)
Yellow/Black Wire ECU Pin 45B (THA)

Your a/c will not run so install the following:

Air Conditioning: Pull-Up Resistor
Wire in 1k ohm resistor between pins:
ECU Pin 34A (A/C) blue/red wire (a/c request input)
ECU Pin 33A (BATT) black/yellow wire (Battery Voltage)
Resistor Specs:
Resistance: 1,000 (1k) Ohms
Part Number: Radio Shack #271-153
Color Bands: Brown-Black-Red

Set the following in the A/C options menu:
A/C Request Input: "Switch #6 Ground = ON"
A/C Output #1: LS6
A/C Output #2: Disable

This should set you up pretty good. Have fun.

That is what I want to know too.... How do you like it? I'm debating on trading in my Eman Ultimate for the AEM

I LOVE it. Worth every penny and I'd recommend it to anyone *ONLY* if you, or someone you know is an experienced tuner that fully understands what it takes to get a car to run safely and correctly. If not, stick with the easier setups that are not as ideal but work. The AEM is an incredibly powerful tool and if you don't know how to use it, you will regret it. I only run mine because I have Lance at Toyomoto in my corner should I get stuck and he sure as hell knows what he's doing.

Remember you're not tweaking a few signals for the stock computer. You are eliminating it completely and now you're running the show from start to finish. Know and understand what that means and you'll be good.

My 1101 was plug and play, with exception of the map and air temp sensor. Are you sure yours was a 1101 because the mods you decscribed in the unit are the only thing that differs from the supra 1100.

Yep, definitely an 1101 box, #0027. The exception of the map and air temp sensors was basically the only parts I mentioned and covered so we had the same exact issues. The a/c problem might be due to a body difference between the Supras and the Lexus cars, who knows.

bringing this up!

how exactly do u wire in the resistor? from my reading and understanding, it sounds like u cut the wires from pins 33A and 34A, and solder in the resistor on wires coming from AEM side. another way of reading this is to simply bridge the 2 pins together with the resistor (ie, stripping part of 33A and 34A and soldering resistor between them). anyone who's done this successfully clear this up for me? it's getting quite warm here in atlanta! tia.

Right, bridge the 2 wires with the resistor. Don't cut anything.

thanks cleansc. a/c is now working.

fyi, i had to also select LS6 for the A/C Fan Speed for some reason. A/C button now works, it turns the compressor on/off.

Explain please... I drew a diagram on SF.com - craaaazy I know you saw it.

Are you talking about putting a leg of the resistor down into pin 33 and the other into 34?

Thanks,
Jonny

jonny, the simplest and most secure way would be to strip a portion of both wires and then solder the resistor in. that's what i did. i guess you could also try to just insert the resistor into the pins themselves but i wouldn't be surprised if that wiggled itself out sometime later.

Yeah definitely check the fan outputs to see if they are activated with the a/c. I found that to be an issue even though the SC doesn't come with an a/c fan. It wants the circuit closed in order to engage the ac clutch.
