Default Seeking advice on a used SC400 transmission/install

My project car's transmission is shifting late when driving sporty. Around 4-5K rpm, and at 196K I'm not surprised. When I drive normal/slow it shifts fine, but if I'm on it she won't upshift good at all. Sure I could use it for a while but I can't drive it like I want to. I can get a used tranny with 84K for $250, same year/model.

I was looking at Rockauto's auto transmission section and found all these parts available... Out of all these parts, what's recommended replacing when putting on a used transmission? The tranny hasn't been pulled from the car yet so it hasn't been sitting out getting weathered, but I'm not a mechanic and I've never played with transmissions before. I also don't want to crack this thing open in a million pieces, just want to replace the basic stuff.

Default Transmission

Don't even think of rebuilding it, or having it rebuilt.

There are far too many good, used transmissions out there for $500-1000. OR LESS! I nearly got one for $300 but guy couldn't deliver and I was out of town.

Suggest you do a nationwide Craigslist search (using Dailylister.com or similar) for a few weeks to find one. Find someone willing to warranty it as you're gonna spend $800 having it swapped in.

I plan to do the work myself as I can get access to a lift on the weekend, this is a project on a very tight budget, and I'm into it for about $2000 right now. The transmission comes from Aliga(who's very reputable on here) and it's a local pick up for me.

My engine runs very strong, compression tested good, just had ecu rebuilt via Tanin, did a complete timing belt kit install, new caps/rotors, spark plugs, wires, water pump, brand new BC coilovers and probably a few more things I can't think of off the top of my head on the car. I know I can make my money parting it, but the more work I do decreases my profit when parting, and this will bring my total to about $2300. Alternatively I don't know how much I can sell the car for once it's all fixed up.

Should I do the rear main seal while I have the tranny out? Any tips or tricks for popping one out of the SC? Also any info on how long the job takes?

I would never pass up a chance to change a front or rear main seal (or cam seals) if they're exposed. But I'm not a Lexus mechanic, I can't tell you the degree of difficulty...or cost!

I've always had great luck buying lunch for techs who had the information I needed -- or bringing in donuts or beer --- 9 am, or 4pm...NOT at 7:30-8 when 'leventy-leven people are dropping their car off or 4:30 when they begin picking up.

Good luck!

Most normal, good mechanics I know make a face when I ask about cracking a tranny.

Just call Gazi (Alliga), he will have an A340 cheap!

Yea forget cracking it up, Gazi's tranny is only at 84K. So nothing to do while I'm in there other then the rear main seal?
