Default Single and Dual Exhaust Performance

Staying on the NA route, I plan on doing my exhaust soon. But I am deciding on two ways to go. One would be to get a new y pipe with new 2 1/4 inch piping into magnaflow mufflers with stock tips. The other would be to run a single exhaust with the same piping and then a high performance muffler like hks and **** it to the side. My question is what would perform better, I mean could I even tell the difference in the two, beside the looks?
