Default R154 tranny...soarer and supra mkIII the same?

Just curious as the mk3 trannys are obviously alot easier to come by. Are there any differences to warrant trying to find the already hard to find soarer 5-speed tranny? Or is it just as simple as grabbing the R154 form any mk3 supra?

edit: I guess I should have elaborated, but I mean the jdm sc300 (naturally) but the usdm supra. Reason was that if the tranny ever breaks, it will cheap and easy to replace. These 5-speeds can hold some pretty damn good power upwards of ~700rwhp last I check

The R154, from what I've come to have learn, is the same throughout, it all comes down to the bellhousing etc. (obviously the Soarer one slips straight in, no mucking about).

Lemme know what you find, how common are they in the US? I've been having dreams of a manual Soarer recently (Don't really wanna sell mine for a manual... got my car as a present so it's worth way more to me than any amount of money).

I can tell you the automatic trannies for the 1jz supra and 1jz soarer arent the same ($600 later and an extra tranny in the garage) so I doubt the r154 trannies will be the same

If the tailshaft is different, will a Soarer driveshaft work w/ a Supra R154 w/ a Soarer 154 bellhousing (w/ a ......)? Basically, take a MKIII turbo trans and put the 1JZ bellhousing on. Will the Soarer driveshaft fit?

This sucks! It seems that the r154 requires as much work and money to get working as going 6-speed. Keep the responses coming guys, this is good stuff that a newb in the future can search on .

R154 tranny should be about 200 bucks off anywhere
1JZ bellhousing I've seen it as low as 200 bucks
R154 soarer tailshaft I only saw once once which I bought.

i bought the following for $850 shipped.
R154 tranny from a soarer
MKIII tailshaft and shifter
soarer tailshaft and shifter
soarer clutch fork
soarer driveshaft
MKIII driveshaft
soarer tranny rear mount
MKIII tranny rear mount
soarer rear cross
MKIII rear cross

it's not as expensive as a getrag-6 swap. no way.
It's not easy to come by but they can be had new for less than the core getrag-6

Where did you purchase these items? You buy them new from toyota? I was about to go get a MK3 r154 rear and trans, 1jz bellhousing. Then only the driveshaft would be an issue. I thought all I would have to do is alter the length seeing how im using all MK3 parts I wont need any soarer parts.

Yes, please explain, I would like to know where you got these. I have been thinking of just swaping the r154 instead of my poor old w58. Any info would be nice.

let's see..

R154 tranny should be about 200 bucks off anywhere - supraforums MKIII for sale section or on ebay.

1JZ bellhousing I've seen it as low as 200 bucks - supraforums MKIII for sale or 1JZ swap section or ebay. I've seen it in all 3 places

R154 soarer tailshaft I only saw once once which I bought. supraforums MKIII 1jz swap section.

i bought the following for $850 shipped. (this was a package deal a guy over at supraforums made me).
R154 tranny from a soarer
MKIII tailshaft and shifter
soarer tailshaft and shifter
soarer clutch fork
soarer driveshaft
MKIII driveshaft
soarer tranny rear mount
MKIII tranny rear mount
soarer rear cross
MKIII rear cross

you can get most of these parts and then some if you go to a front-cut vendors and they will be able to get you the whole thing for under $2000. Of course the stuff you don't need you are going to have to sell yourself because most vendors will not let you pick and choose only the parts you want.

yeah R154 may be less than 60kg... it is a BEEFY tranny though... the V160 I think is over 60kg... only trannies I've seen as large are the 6-speed tranny that comes with the VQ35DE-Z variant and the Borg-Warner T56

But yeah... all the parts that just got listed can be bought out of local junkyards here or out of engine importers... venus auto is a great place to get one-off parts like that...

once you've got it all setup, its very economical too... blow a tranny? oh well, spend $200 more for one out of a junkyard...

as far as i know, all you need is the 1jz manual flywheel with the 1jz R154-variant bellhousing and you use 7m-gte clutches
