EGR stuff off (DIY)
EGR remove
I had 71 code error . It is set when ECU do not see that EGR is working at some conditions (engine hot light throttle operations)
So I decided remove that emission stuff at all.
Jerry.

stock egr stuff

First I blocked EGR pipe that is connected at upper rear side of plenum.
I unscrew two bolts remove old metal gasket, made new gasket (thin steel from coffee can) using old as template and put it back and seal it with high temp silicone. So hot gases do not pass any more to intake manifold.
that pipe is one steel with some gold looking

Next I removed all EGR stuff from intake (it is at driver side engine) and made new block off plate again using old metal gasket as template, next bolt it to intake (add silicone for sure seal).

Next I removed all that stuff from engine bay, add new longer hose for coolant (EGR valve is cooled by engine coolant via small diameter rubber hose).
Next block at throttle body first two connectors (from windshield side) as they are no longer needed.

And last but most important. After removing EGR stuff you MUST make that ecu still thinking EGR is perfectly working or you will have 71 code again.
That is done by simple cheap resistor 10k-ohm, 1/2 watt. You find it in every electronic parts shop. Put it in plug that is for EGR probe and that will fool ecu and you will never ever have 71 error code. Next put some tape on it: that help keep moisture and dirt from plugs.
resistors. you need ONE.

That is all.
2-3 hours of fun, engine compartment look better and you will not put hot gases to intake any more.
Costs:
Resistor: 0,05$
EGR block off plate rear: free until you have some old steel coffee can.
EGR block off plate side: free too..
Some beer ($2-5)
Have fun
Jerry.
Btw there is place for improvements
Next I will remove vsv switch for EGR but must use resistor too (not sure but maybe ecu is looking for resistance that switch to be sure it working) and remove all that chrome metal small pipes from plenum at all (one is left for fuel pressure regulator via second vsv). At the end you can remove at all that steel goldie looking EGR pipe that coming from exhaust header to intake manifold plenum but I just do not want play with plumbing exhaust manifild now.

och and in the end NOW I REALLY for 100% know why 71 code was set.
That vacuum pipe from throttle body to EGR (metal part) was pluged with something)
Now it is useless so may be pluged...
Jerry
and old EGR stuff RIP

but...
I done that mod cause I think my car is still clean even with EGR off (in Japan there is no egr in that engine).
Next, emission there is checked at idle, and I think at idle EGR is no working at all...

gas mileage
So after all this... has it affected your gas mileage?
My 71 just came up.
oh BTW, nice to know that in Japan the engine doesn't have an EGR
