i've got the part from toyota dealer and planning to take my car
to my mechanic. what exactly do i need to tell them to replace?
starter contact points?

Hey Pat, just go to your mechanic, hand him the parts you got from Carson and say "put these in and take the old crap out"...if he's a good mechanic he'll know what to do from there...lol...

yeah, that's what im planning to do but he was claiming about something else.
i guess ill just hv to show him the part and hopefully will cure my starting problems.

Taking it to a mechanic?? Weak haha nah its all good, just tell him you want the starter contacts replaced and it should take no more than an hours labor to do. If he doesnt know what starter contacts are, walk out the door. Too bad you dont live in Florida, Id glady do the job for someone in less than an hour (with just ramps and air gun)

Wyatt!!! Grrrr!!! Ha ha ha ha, I know I know...but we're not all as talented as you!!Some stuff I do still take my car to a mechanic for, not like a real "mechanic" with a shop and overhead who'll charge me up the ying-yang, but a friend of mine who's a certified mechanic...a "shade tree" mechanic if you will, but a very skilled one.

Some stuff I just won't risk doing myself unfortunately.

took my car today to mechanic and i paid 75.00 for labor.....not bad...since i dont have the proper tools to do it. the car starts with no more problems.............well,............so far.
i threw away the old contact points from the starter......you shud hv seen it...it waz all torn up!!
im glad that's over with.

Yep. Once you see the difference between the old and the new contact points, you'll understand why the starter was acting up.

what up mike! for the motor side, it's $14.79 and the other is $15.95.

pretty much, i spent about 115.00 including the labor.....not bad!

update of my car until now (jan 7), it starts like a charm!!!!

yeah, man.....the problem started around november.......and it comes and goes.
most of the time though, the car will start normally then after about 5 days or so, it will
start acting up. there waz only one incident at my work when my car just wont start....
i think i heard like 100 times of "clicking" when i turned "on" my ignition key.............hahahha

THEN IT FINALLY STARTED!!!.........

After taking my stater apart the first time and cleaning the contacts off with some rough sand-paper, I had a pretty scary incident.
At first cleaning the contacts helped and the car started fine.
Two weeks of perfect starting passed.
One day, I turned the key to Start...
The car started fine, but when I moved the key back to ON, there was a strange noise.
I then proceeded to turn my key to OFF and take it out of the ignition....car was still cranking over.
It took me about 3 minutes to find my wrench and remove the negative off the battery, meanwhile the car was crancking non-stop.
What happened was the plunger inside the starter got baked onto one of the contacts and remained in the engaged position.
After that I decided to change out my contacts all together and since then haven't had any problems in 4 months.

First time I took out the starter, it took about 2 hours.
Now I can do it in under half an hour.
Practice makes perfect. =)
