Strange Noise from Engine

Strange Noise from Engine
I have a few ideas as to what it may be, but I wanted to ask you guys also...
I have a 1993 SC300, currently stock, for the last several months it has been making a wierd noise. It happens once the engine has warmed up and goes away after driving for several miles. Sort of a rhythmic tapping/squeaking sound. When the sound is there, it gets louder when in Drive (AT) and when I turn the steering wheel or turn on the AC. So it sounds like when there is load on the engine, it gets louder. It varies with RPMs and like I said, after driving for several miles, it goes away. I'm ready for the timing belt service (95k) and will be replacing most of the stuff that should be replaced while in there. Any quick thoughts or other things I should think about?
Also, on a quick aside... What do people do about valve tapping noise? I've been using Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 which seems to work well, but anytime I use 5W-30, I get a lot of valve tap. I'd like to go back to using synthetic, but 10W-40 seems to be blend or dino oil only. What have others been doing about this?
