Default Is Your Transmission a Slow Learner?

Does anyone have definitive information regarding the learning cycle of the SC400 transmission?
I'm aware of the "disconnect the battery cable - then drive the crap out of the car method", but I would think that the trans would be in a continual state of learning. So the question is how does the trans learn, and how often does it learn, and under what conditions will it forget what it learned (other than disconnecting the cable). Maybe someone has a technical description of the functionality of the trans logic.
