Question Really weird engine noise?

So I get into my car this morning, crank it up and I hear this weird, loud crackling/suction noise. Kinda sounds like the spark plug wires sparking (only louder) and the intake at open throttle. The noise was coming from the spark plug wire area and the intake manifold area. It didn't sound good to say the least, but even weirder was...once I put it into drive, it was gone and never heard from for the rest of the day, like it only happened at cold start. Any takers? Did this happen to anyone else?

I had a smiliar situation and it turned out to be the transmission. Whenever I started it cold I'd hear that god aweful noise until I shifted it into drive or reverse and then it would go away. I picked up a used tranny with 60k from a local salvage yard. Hopefully it's not the tranny in your case.

I don't see how it could be the tranny when it's in park. But let's hope it's not. I haven't heard it since, maybe it was a fluke. Still it was odd and got me worried. Thanks!

I purchased a 92 SC400 with 100k miles. The valve adjustment had never been done. 3 of the shim buckets, they fit over the valve spring and hold the shim, had to be replaced because of wear. I would have a "death rattle" for a few moments, then the sound disappeared.
The cams have to come out to replace the buckets.
I contribute the longer "Schedule B" oil changes (every 7500 miles) that the previous owner followed to some of the problem.
If your rattle is the same as mine, the cost was $1068 for parts and labor.

Wow...I'll make sure to keep an eye and an ear on that. I definitely wouldn't describe it as a "death rattle" but you do have me more on my toes about the matter. Only problem is, at the time being, I can't bring it to a mechanic and say, "Do ya hear that?" Haven't heard it since so let's hope it's gone for good. But judging by the condition my car's in, a woman probably did own it and I'm sure oil changes were not of a priority for her. I have a 1998 with now 84k miles, so let's hope it was a fluke.
