Could be a picture taken during engine durability test. Wonder if there's a dynamometer connected...

Quote from Planetsoarer.com
From the classic LS400 ad from the early 1990's - emphasis on engineering and testing. You can see the standard headers glowing red hot. These are supposed to flow quite well and are hard to improve on. See other standard header photos down below.

Very cool picture. I've seen the turbo manifold on a dood's 7M glow red during dyno runs. Everytime it did it i felt a strong urge to poke it with a screwdriver or ink pen Back in my wild highschool days, I remember my friends and I lit a doobie off my friend's Nova's header at 6 in the morning. Goodtimes.

Your picture doesn't show up if you don't login to OT... one of those pic hosting deals.

In reference to the 1UZFE picture in the first post...

I have posted that and referenced it for my agument that the 1st gen 1990-1994 1UZFE was OVERRATED from the factory. The picture does appear to be of dyno testing.

I base this on chassis dyno number consistently being in the 175-180hp range. That is a hard to believe 28-30% drivetrain loss. I suggest 230-235 flywheel horsepower is probably more accurate. That would make a more reasonable 24-25% drivetrain loss... still a bit high but understandable.

BTW, the 1995-1997 LS400s (1996-1997 SC400s) were up rated to 260hp and typically dyno around 190-200rwhp. That equates to a 23-27% loss range. Also, the 1995 LS400 was around 200 pounds lighter than the 1994 and was a full SECOND faster 0-60. 10hp is not enough to make that difference. 20-30hp is more like it. I suggest the 1990-1994 at 230hp and the 1995-1997 (96-97 for SC400s) at the actual 260hp.

The thing that really catches my eye about the picture is that the exhaus does NOT have catalysts or the rest of the restrictive system in place. It also has an unrestricted intake. This "dyno" engine probably made the 250hp that the engine is advertised with but with cats, exhaust and intake restrictions of the installed engine power drops a good 15-20hp.
