Default Recirculating Fan

Just got my car back from the mechanic who says that this high pitched squeal I'm getting from somewhere around the center console is actually the recirculating fan. Doesn't really happen unless I hit about 40mph, and it doesn't happen all the time. It happens randomly from 40mph and up, lasts for a few seconds, then goes quiet. Anyone experience anything like this? Got a fix?

Thanks.

If the recirculating fan that you're talking about is the air condiditioning fan, I can't fathom why it would be speed related, especially if it's in recirculating mode when it's not pulling in outside air. However, I do know the basic instructions about how to pull out the A/C fan since I had to pull out a piece of pine straw from mine. A foreign object will make plenty of noise once it gets into the A/C intake manifold. I posted instructions some time ago that may still be searchable.

I was told it was a free flow fan that takes in outside air (non motorized) and spins faster as more air comes in (i.e. as you go faster...)

I'm not familiar with something like that, but I'm no expert. There are plenty of people on this forum who could help you out.

Hmmm, I wonder if that is the pressure sound I hear if I throttle up alot and then back off quick. I hear something in the console hiss. I notice it on both the SC300 and SC400 and the SC400 is not turbo yet so no joking about BOVs please.

It's getting louder. Man is it annoying. High pitched squeal coming from the center console. (Not to be confused with the already annoying sound of the drive-shaft gone bad.) Mechanic said that he could try and fix it, but he wasn't sure he'd actually be able to get to the sound. He said he'd replace the blower motor, and other things, but said that the tolerances are so tight in there, that the likelihood of making the sound go away wasn't good.
