Default Tranny Coated in Oil

Well when i first saw it hen i was lookin at the car... i gave the guy the benefit of the doubt that it's just the oil that spills when chaning the oil filter.

However, it is a pretty nice layer of oil under there though it never drips on the garage floor.

But I noticed that shifting from first to second (5 sp '92) it's a bit notchy, all other gears are fine.

This is on stock clutch with 113k miles.

Previous owner said the tranny fluid was changed around 85k miles.

Ya guys think i've got a big problem on my hands?

My '95 is also notchy shifting into second gear. I'm the second owner so I don't know if that because of poor shifting practices before I got it. However, I did have a problem with tranny oil leaking after an oil change place mistakenly loosened the tranny drain plug instead of the oil drain plug. They didn't tighten it up correctly and it would drip. Since you're not experiencing oil on the ground, you may have a slower leak than I did, possibly higher in the tranny assembly. I believe manual tranny oil is about 90 weight so if you have a slow leak high up on the tranny, it may stick and not drip. I plan to change my tranny lube to help my shifting problem. If you'd like to try tightening the tranny drain plug you'll need a large metric socket that I didn't have. I think it may be 24 mm.

Rear main seal is leaking. Had the same issue. Replaced it along with the clutch, and no more wet tranny.

The seal costs somewhere around $20-30. Labor for me, was $300 @ SP engineering, but that was just for me. They will probably quote you ~800+.

$800 is a little steep. When i spoke to my previous owners mechanic, he quoted me $300 for the labor. Its still by all means driveable, just watch the oil level. If you have the stock clutch in there still and its starting to slip at all or if youre looking at higher power levels might as well do the clutch/pressure plate too while you have the tranny off.

PS. im in chino hills and just picked up a white 92 5 speed too =). Ive had it for about a month
Im going to swing by my shop tomorrow. Ill ask how much it would cost. Drop me an email and maybe you can roll down with me sometime to get it done.

damn... i wish my friend still worked at SP...

The original clutch doesn't slip at all actually... it feels like new.

I guess I'll hold it out for as long as i can. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have anything major.

But yea rscott... i'd definately be down to roll if we can get some good prices.
