Does anybody ever shift their SC400 manually? Is that really bad for the tranny? I'd imagine so but im just curious cause I know the later sc400(least I think?) was a 5 spd auto you could shift yourself.(am i right?)

I imagine its not the best thing, but I doubt its gonna tear up the tranny like dropping it into drive when revving in neutral. The 98-00 SC's had an automatic transmission with a gated shifter, but it didn't have E-shift/tiptronic type shifting control I don't believe so shifting it would be basically the same as shifting a 92-97 SC. Probably not a good idea to put the tranny in L every time you start out, but a few drops into second gear shouldn't mean death for your transmission. I mean, they did come with an overdrive button that allowed you to basically downshift..

it's absolutely pointless.

The tranny can shift faster than you can any day of the week. It's a superior auto tranny.

No, why would you think that it does?

In any case, the transmission will always start in 1st gear no matter the selector position from a dead stop.

I thought it started in 2nd unless you floored it.
I agree, the shifts are way faster than you could do yourself, even has me wondering if a manual conversion would be a wash as far as performance goes.

Granted I don't have an SC, but I will drive in 3rd or 4th most of the time. The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are definitely right on so I let that tranny do those. But I find that if I wind out 3rd further than the tranny takes it and then just push it to 4th the car will leap and I can easily pull a few cars if I am racing someone. The car just seems to respond better rather than letting the tranny make the 3-4 or 4-5 shifts.

Also driving around in 4th rather than 5th gives me better response if I need to make a quick move for any reason.

Not sure if this helps you, but thought I would offer it anyway. Sorry if it's useless info.

BTW it always starts in 1st, the only vehicles I have ever heard starting in 2nd are trucks that haul heavy loads, but they're usually a manual.
