RPM starts dropping then stalls
when i was stopped at a red light, my RPM started dropping from 500 to 400 then went all the way down to 100, then my check engine light came on and stalled.
what da heck is wrong with my car?
i couldn't find any older threads relating to this.
i'm driving my sister's accord until i feel safe driving my car again.

Happened to me after I did some work under the hood, researching the BFI. When I reattached the intake tube it didnt go on over the two little bumps that hold the hard plastic and rubber toghether. I'm guessing air was leaking and the MAF was reading that and I was getting bad mixture so it led to a stall and a check engine light. Don't know if you did any similar work, but look at the intake system.

The list on what that could be is endless. i'd start by checking the fuel pump CFM. it is more common to be a fuel problem than anything. filter, pump, ecu. all in the fuel system. This is barring the possibility your MAF and related sensors are working correctly.

thanks people. i think it's my MAF mostly cuz it's been hiding under the heatshield and never opened it for over a year never noticed it until now.
if it's not, i guess i'll have to take it to a dealer.

before i got this problem checked out, i had replaced a battery cuz it was dead.
couple days ago, my battery light came on, so i took it to a mechanic.
he said my oil was leaking and it was dropping on to my alternator. he showed it to me and it was black, covered with oil. soooo i had to get a new alternator and had to fix that leak.
and about the RPM dropping and my engine stalling, he just tweaked my idle up a little bit and told me to come back to him if it still drops.
i'll see what happens then..

the mechanic wasn't really trying to cover up anything.
he just said if what he did works fine, then drive it, or else he'll do a full check-up.
so far, my car is fine. i dont wanna waste too much money fixing this sorta aging car...

Aznteazer, do you have an SC400? If so check your power steering resevoir, pump and lines... they may be leaking (I can't remember off the top of my head which one can cause havoc with the alternator if it's leaking. I had this exact problem with my 93 Soarer 2.5GT, ended up being a really loose (and heavily corroded) neg. battery terminal, cutting power. But the first thing I'd probably check is the power steering parts.

Please, please do the following regardless:
Either recondition or replace the power steering pump or you will need another alternator
Check for vacuum leaks.
You might want to replace the negative battery cable regardless since this is a major cause of ghosts in the car's electrical system. Lights go dim when something else comes on and other stuff
