Question Taillight Tint Law in Washington State

I was interested in tinting my tail lights but I wasn't sure about Washington state's laws on that.

The WA State Trooper website said no tint overlay or anything is allowed - period, but then other people said that your brake lights have to be visible from a certain distance.

What have you guys heard?

this should answer your question. basically, the 1,000 feet away is based on one regulation. but there's a law prohibiting taillight modifications which trumps that.

If it's light, you might get lucky. If it's dark, you'll probably get one some time or another. I talked to a lot of people over a long time that have been pulled over for it.

Thanks, Jason. That link was helpful. I guess that no mod rule does trump the 1000 ft. rule and these are State Troopers who are saying that. :^/

MK: Yeah, makes sense. I thought tinting the tails would look nice but I might have to think about that again since I don't know if I really want to get pulled. Tinting it lightly could be fine but if it's hard to tell it's different than stock, might not be worth it to tint in the first place. Personal preference I guess.

Body shops and some tint shops can do tinting on lights if you don't go the DIY route?

From looking at your sig those tints don't look bad at all. Do you have any larger pics of your IS around these forums?

one thing you can get away with is tinting them red. it covers the amber for a cleaner look. but it's subtle enough that a cop probably wouldn't think twice if he were behind you.

Thanks for the link, markeezy.

Maybe I'll go to your guys' meet one of these days. I'll keep an eye out on the forum.

Hmm, red tint could work. Never thought about that. It's definitely good for red outs if you want to get rid of any orange on taillights like other Lexus models.
