It doesn't need to be "bastardized", just needs to be a few inches longer to accommodate an optional third row.
From my experience an optional third row is useless for the most part. I had an '07 Highlander that Toyota tried an "optional" third row in. No adult could sit back there comfortably, it could only accommodate two 5 yr olds. You also lose all the storage where the seat flopped down in. Basterized!
If you need to accommodate 8 people a mini van is much more comfortable..

In an old Highlander (two generations ago at this point) I agree. It depends on the vehicle. The new Highlander for instance has a very usable for adults third row (I'm 6" and 210 lbs), the QX60 has a *great* third row. The MDX is not quite as good as either of them, but better than your old Highlander, its a little shorter than the Highlander or the QX60 and you can feel it in the drive. Its important that the third row be designed into the vehicle from the start as opposed to "added on" as it was in your 07 Highlander. Bear in mind that old Highlander was 2" shorter than the current RX350 with only 2 rows...and only 2 inches longer than this NX...it was small...
I don't want to drive a minivan every day for the 4 or 5 times a year I may want to carry more than 4 people...thats why I want the flexibility of the third row. When I don't need the third row, its just stowed away.
1. Look at those shoulders. I think previous pics didnt give this justice... it will be most likely the standout feature in real life. No more slab sides!
2. Interior really looks great... someone sitting in it gives it more real life feel... soo many details!
182" is not confirmed but my guess would be that (2 inches longer than the RAV4). Two more observations: 1. No sunglasses holder - and why does that rectangle look like an LCD screen more than a light cover??? 2. Extended rocker panel doors a la RX and Venza.
We were spotting the same thing in the same pictures. .
For #1: My guess is the rectangular piece also holds the rumored light sensors (comment section of Lexus Enthusiast").
For #2: I believe you are referring to the lower black plastic piece that is part of the doors. I find this built-in rocker panels unique in RX. It does have a better clearance for the feet when you get in and out of the cabin. However, one caution is when you jack up the car, it is tricky to find the anchor points.
