i wrote about this previously as I considered whether I should buy a CPO 200t. Dealer is selling after previous buyer (on a lease) returned it after a month. Purchase date was i March. I understand the orig factory warranty (4 yr/50K) on a Lexus is transferrable. Therefore, if this car is being sold as a CPO, which is 3 yrs/100K from purchase date, does this replace the orginal factory warranty or just something the dealer automatically offers. I actually would still have more time on the original warranty after the CPO expires, so should I have the dealer de-CPO the car, reducing the purchase price?

Original "New Car" warranty is transferable from the original owner to the new owner. As soon as the original owner turned the car into the dealer, the new car warranty ended. The fine prints on the original warranty specifically states that this excludes car sold as used through third parties (ie used car dealers).

The CPO program allows Lexus dealers to offer a warranty is under written by Lexus and will be serviced by any Lexus dealer. That's the difference between a "new car warranty" and a Lexus CPO warranty.

Some dealers will under write their own warranty on non-CPO cars, either themselves valid only at their dealership, or through a 3rd party warranty company. Buyer beware on getting coverage and resolving disputes.

Another option is to purchase a new 2015 car and get Geico's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance for about $41.50 every 6 months (on a new NX200T F sport) which basically extends the warranty (through Geico) for 7 years or 100,000 miles. It has a $250 deductible and covers about the same things that the normal Lexus warranty would cover. It is transferrable to a new owner if they have Geico insurance. I've had it on my last Lexus (2006 IS 350), a 2013 Porsche Boxster S and now the new NX200t F Sport. You have to purchase it fairly soon after you buy your new car.
