Default 2015 Lexus NX 200t sales remain above BMW X3 and Lincoln MKC

Good article about the NX sales wise vs the X3.

http://www.torquenews.com/1083/2015-...nd-lincoln-mkc

When Lexus introduced the new Lexus NX 200t, the auto press as a whole got it wrong. Most outlets who should have known better thought it was a competitor to the BMW X1 or the Porsche Macan. In fact, it was the BMW X3 shopper that Lexus wanted to steal, and the NX has done that and more.

The Lexus NX 200t sales and a few NX 300h hybrids totaled 3,633 units in March of this year. BMW sold just 1,541 X3s. That is about a third of the typical month for that vehicle prior to the NX launch. Last March, before the new NX 200t was launched, BMW enjoyed sales of 4,430 units of the popular (at the time) X3.

Year to date, the 2015 NX line by Lexus have sold 9,111 units total. BMW, by comparison, has sold 6,006 X3s, down 42% on the year. Lexus is not the only new premium compact crossover on the scene. The Lincoln MKC is also new and sold 2,070 units in March. Launched at about the same time as the MKC late last year, the Lexus NX has now outsold the Lincoln by almost 2 to 1. BMW’s reduced sales may have been worse except the compact crossover market is growing rapidly, and the premium segment, in particular, is picking up its pace.

The BMW X3 has some pretty big strong points, including one of the best rides in its segment. It does have a price problem when equally equipped and cross-shopped by buyers. The X3 is due for a full redesign soon, and we would not count it out quite yet.

We also considered that the Lexus NX may be stealing sales from the 2015 RX 350. That model is in its last year of its design cycle, and the new RX 350 for 2016 has already been announced and shown at auto shows. There is no sign of parasitic sales by the NX though. The RX is up 5% year to date over last year. As a combined pair, the NX and RX lines now dominate the Lexus line in terms of unit sales accounting for fully 41% of the company’s total sales volume.

Thank you for sharing! These are pretty strong numbers. NX definitely won us over, we were on our 3rd RX and were getting tired of "same ol' same", so we crossed shopped X3 and Q5, but then came NX F-Sport and the deal was sealed.

Global production capacity limitations resulting in a planned max US allocation of 42k units for 2015 means we should continue to expect roughly max 3600 units per month. This will likely still trail behind the 4k+ units/mth for the RDX. I tend to wonder what the sales would be if capacity was not constrained.

Definitely will be selling a lot more. A dealer showed me all the inventory and most are snapped up before they're unloaded from the ship. It's one of the most in demand cars I've seen.

Indeed very hot now. The question remains what will happen when demand exceeds the aforementioned capacity constraints (and allocation to the US market). I suspect a waiting list could occur (we've seen that with the Macan and Evoque) but so far haven't seen that with the NX. Let's see April and and a couple more month's sales on whether sales seem to cap off around 3600-3700. Things can always change at Lexus for instance if global demand drops elsewhere to shift more units to the US, though Europe and Japan for instance are also hitting record sales.

Unless the buyer is really set on the NX, they could move on to other models like the RX as we've seen for example. Other brands could offer attractive incentives to lure buyers who don't want a long wait time. This is a pretty important segment after all, and I don't see other brands go down without a fight.

I wonder if those constraints on the NX may be why we see sales up for the RX?

The luxury compact CUV segment is really hot right now. A great time to be shopping if one is in the market in this segment. No surprise that the NX is doing so well. Between the NX and RX, Lexus is in great shape with their CUV's.

I saw the refreshed RDXS at the auto show and Acura has made some needed tweaks and additions to it. It will continue to do well for them.
