Default 2500+ Hwy Miles/ best MPG was tank of RegUnleaded

Just returned from my cross country trip - I will post a follow up Part 2 to my earlier "Cross Country" post - later. But wanted to throw this out there.

(NX 200T F-Sport AWD). Best MPG I got on the whole trip was a tank of 85 octane "Regular Unleaded". 26.2 mpg and I didn't change my driving habits. 80-85mph interstate with lots of passing - punching it up to 90-100 at times. I definitely wasn't milking it for mpg. Pulled into a gas station and all they had was regular. I had been driving with the fuel light on for a few miles and didn't want to get stranded on the interstate!

Call me crazy but looking at my calculations. The worst mpgs were with the higher Premium, actually mid grade was better than premium too!!!?!? Of course don't just take my word for it - there will need to be much more research into this. Not to mention I may just have a weird NX with the seat trying to kill me on the first part of my trip and the radio bug that reared its ugly head again.

P.s. The NX (just like my IS350 F-Sport) automatically gives you gas stations near by on the Nav (well at least it asks you if you want them) when the Low a Fuel Light comes on.

More later on my return trip including details on windshield wipers, the hood "buffeting" when passing big rigs, the damn seats and the Radio Lock Up / Reset.

What grade fuel does the manual tell you to put into the car? Most boosted engines require premium (91 or higher). If you don't use it, you will cause knocking and boost issues and potential engine issues down the road.

Thanks for the info. This is a nice feature. Even though I always use the same gas station this feature could come in handy on road trips.

Page 592 in the manual says 91 or higher.

It seems like most of the luxury brands (Lexus, MB, Audi etc.) with small turbo engines recommend premium. Other brands, Ford, Kia, Hyundai etc. recommend regular.

Alright, then based on that OP, you have been potentially causing knocking issues with your engine and have potentially been damaging it.

Knocking in an engine can be dangerous if allowed to happen over a prolonged period.

Its not tied to the brand as much as the compression that the company wants to run.

It was 1 tank and no there has been no knocking issues or any engine issues at all. Premium in CO is only 89 (at least at Costco)

I was told by my salesman that you can use regular gasoline as well. But top tier quality (Chevron, Shell etc) Been kind of hesitant so I've stuck with premium 91 but i would like to know more from others too?

Talked to my saleswoman this morning as well. Said that they go fill up the vehicle for you prior to delivery, and they get the cheapest (lowest grade). That if I am trying to get the best PERFORMANCE for sporty/high rpm driving then the higher octane is better for that type of driving.

Also, here in Colorado, the Octane levels are 85/89/91 (Costco labels 89 as Premium) - lower than other places in the US due to the altitude. Fell free to google COLORADO FUEL OCTANE and read all about it. I wont clamor on about it but supposedly the cars compensate for knocking and banging and that less O2 and more altitude/pressure in CO allows lower octane levels to burn better here.

The car will compensate for lower octane gas, but the car is designed for premium. Who knows what kind of damage will occur long term if you use regular gas instead of premium?

I'm sure it will be fine for a tank or two... but if you can't afford premium fuel, why even bother buying this Lexus?

I have RX350 and it's nice to use regular fuel in it, but I wouldn't cheap out on fuel for this one.

SO can we get a MPG thread going? Would love to see what real world mileage is.

No one has entered yet on fuelly.com so maybe someone here could be the first!
