could be very similar... Rav4 is pretty roomy and has large trunk. NX will not have vertical space as Rav4 due to the sloping rear though.

Default Lexus USA Shares NX Sales Projections

Mark Rechtin of the Automotive News recently spoke with Lexus USA general manager Jeff Bracken about NX sales projections:

…he expects Lexus to sell about 2,200 NX units a month in the United States. He added, however, that Lexus’ U.S. dealer council has informed him that such an estimate is too conservative.

“From a sizing standpoint, it’s basically the same size as the original RX 300,” Bracken said. “Nobody has made any analogy to it being an over-sized RAV4.”

When Lexus launched the original RX 300 in 1998, it had the same sales estimate. RX demand quickly jumped above six figures a year, and it became Lexus’ best selling product.
For perspective, Mercedes sold 32,553 GLK models and BMW sold 30,623 X3 models in 2013 — if Lexus USA is planning to sell only 26,400 NX models per year, the biggest problem will be availability.

(Have to think the NX will cut into RX sales somewhat — however, with a yearly average of 93,965 RX models sold over the past three years, Lexus can certainly afford to funnel some sales towards the new NX.)

Audi sold 40,355 Q5's last year, so including this with X3 (30,623) and GLK (32,553) sales there is a lot of volume in the segment. I didn't look, but I think Acura sold even more RDX's. I would guess that the NX will reach similar volume.

depending on the price and availability, it would seem to me that NX would easily outsell those vehicles.

So either the price will be higher than we expect or they wont be able to produce enough cars. Lexus expects NX to be their #1 seller in most of their regions.

Just a touch smaller. We know the NX has 0.4 inches less legroom than the RX and the RX and RAV4 are virtually identical in overall legroom.

RX:
Internal dimensions: front headroom (inches): 39.1, rear headroom (inches): 37.7, front hip room (inches): 55.5, rear hip room (inches): 54.5, front leg room (inches): 43.1, rear leg room (inches): 36.8, front shoulder room (inches): 58.0 and rear shoulder room (inches): 57.6

RAV4:
Internal dimensions: front headroom (inches): 39.8, rear headroom (inches): 38.9, front hip room (inches): 54.2, rear hip room (inches): 48.8, front leg room (inches): 42.6, rear leg room (inches): 37.2, front shoulder room (inches): 57.3 and rear shoulder room (inches): 55.4

makes sense, because NX will have different/deeper seats.

"Templin said Lexus tuned the turbo to deliver smooth acceleration, rather than jerky power thrusts.

"I think ours is going to be more refined than the rest of them in the market," he said. "Ours is more linear, smoother. Much more luxury-like."

I'm happy to read this, was worried NX was trying to be a sports car.

"The NX is derived from the Lexus CT platform with some RAV4 underpinnings"

This is the first time I've read this. Everything before was saying total RAV4

The CT/RAV4 comments could have been a little "spin" to tie the NX closer to Lexus and distance it a bit from the RAV.

Exactly, as we've all seen the camo'd NX prototype with a RAV4 exterior already. Both the CT and the RAV4 are based on the Corolla platform anyway. The only difference to the Corolla is that the CT and the RAV4 both have sportier double wishbone rear suspensions. I think saying the NX is based on the RAV4 with some CT underpinnings would be equally accurate.

I mentioned 32.5k because Edmunds is predicting it will be around 30k

Since it is below the RX I predict it starts at 5-6k below the RX since that is a natural slot below. Some believe Lexus will underprice the vehicle to take marketshare away from the competition. The CT is tough to compare against since it is a hybrid and hybrids typically have a 3-4k premium.

Edmunds is way off on their prediction which undercuts the CT that we know Lexus made this the entry-level Lexus and they also swore they would not be releasing a vehicle undercutting the CT. Edmunds also states an 8-speed auto which we know is 6-speed hence further putting doubt on their credibility wrt this particular vehicle. So we know that's not possible and what you're suggesting 5-6K below the RX is very realistic.

Mark Templin has targeted a 2200/month sales volume in the US which puts it at 25K units per year (and last place). I agree the NX will sell far better than the conservative figure but not sure it will be able to average 3500 units per month to beat the RDX.
