I'm so sorry to hear this man, absolutely horrible. I had my wallet stolen yesterday so am not feeling too keen on humanity lately either.

Unfortunately apple products are the most commonly stolen items out there.
My friend had her apartment broken into and stole her brand new TV and macbook pro.

Fortunately the idiot took it to the apple store to fix the macbook pro (I think they screwed up while restoring the computer, hard drive crashed) and the genius noticed that it wasn't registered to them. The genius knew my friend too so she was able to get her computer back.

It might help to ask all the San Jose apple stores and just let them know.
