Default NorCal Certified Auto Cross at Marina Airfield with UFO Mini Meet, Photoshoot, Dinner

Hi all!!

There is an auto cross event on March 20 at the Marina Airfield, hosted by UFO. One of our very own (MaxNine) works with the organization that hosts this event and can very possibly get us a run group of our own if we have enough cars out there. I would like to use this thread to gauge interest in this event to see if we can have 15-20 dedicated cars that plan on running on Sunday, March 20. Even if you are not planning on running, you are more than welcome to caravan over with us and get good pictures and grub afterwards!!

The plan is to go out and AutoX, photoshoot, and head over to Monterrey (which is about 10 minutes south of the airfield) for dinner. The pier in Monterrey is a good place to have dinner, there are a ton of good seafood restaurants there.
This event IS rain or shine!!

This is the NorCal UFO website if you would like to check it out for yourself: NorCal UFO

For those of you who don't know how autoX works, here is a brief summary:
1. Arrive at the airfield and sign in, walk the track, and attend a driver's meeting (everyone whom is going to run has to attend this meeting), get car tech-ed
2. If you are running in one group, you must sign up to "work" for another group (this means you have to hold flags to flag down drivers, time keeper, etc.). If they catch that you do not show up to work for another group, you possibly will not be able to return to run next time.
3. Fun runs are at the end, time permitting.
(The fee has usually been $35 per driver, and I believe there is a slight discount if you have 2 drivers, for 4 runs.)
There is a morning group and an afternoon group. I am leaning more towards the afternoon group so that we have adequate time to rest the night before and drive out to the site.

You DO need a helmet to run. A regular motorcycle helmet works fine. If you have a nice friend who is running in another group, you can probably borrow theirs if you ask nicely

If you are interested, please either reply to this thread or PM myself with the following information:
1) Which run group would work better for you (either morning or afternoon)
2) If you will be able to make it to dinner
3) Tentative / For sure
4) Will run / Spectator (With/without car)
5) Car model

Thanks much!! Should be fun to have a ton of LEXUS's out auto crossing!!! Doesn't happen too much!!
-Esther

To confirm, do we need helmets for this event?

My bro-in-law auto-crosses with S.C.C.A and I remember there is a helmet regulation.

Usually they provide some loaner helmets. We'll let Ryan or Esther chime in to confirm.

Not that you NEED helmets, Auto cross is very safe since you are only racing against the clock and the worst you can do is knock down some cones.

If you like Malibu Grand Prix or Go karting, then you'll have a blast running your own car on a similar type layout.

Hope people aren't too shy to try as everyone has to have a first time doing this. I remember I gave tips to Brociouz to go drag racing in his car. He got really hooked considering that he was only driving in a straight line for 9 seconds !

Here's a video clip of an autocross run at the Marina where this event will be hosted.

AHH!! Thank you, I did forget that very important part...

YES you do need a helmet. There is usually a truck there that sells helmets and gear. If you have a motorcycle helmet, that works fine. If you have a friend that has one who is running in a different group, you can borrow their's if you ask nice

__

Ok boys and gals, let's get the ball rolling!!
Even if you want to just go to chill, take pix, and come eat afterwards, please reply and LMK!! Don't be shy!!!

Events with UFO aren't super competitive, its all for fun, so you don't need to worry about getting a fast/slow time.

Let's show all the 240's and Integra's that Lexus's can be more than just luxurious and sexy!! We're also fast and furious!!

Bos,
your car should be a blast to drive.

The best thing I think about auto cross is you get to push your car and yourself to the limit. You make a mistake, you lose time, slide or spin out, hit a couple of cones at worse case. After a few runs you learn your limitations and your cars limitations. I think you actually become a better driver on the road because you'll know when you are reaching your limit and know not to go over that limit. Where else can you push 110% get a little squirrely and hopefuly save it, without the risk of damage or endangering others? You'll also have more confidence when you need to take evasive maneuvers to avoid an accident. Lastly you get to put all those performance mods to good use and you can tell everyone you Autocross, and that's why you modify your car LOL.

There will be several walk throughs of the course, so I'd be happy to walk people through and show how to approach each segment of the layout. I'm no pro on the track either, but I read a lot and I did stay at a Holiday Inn recently.

Thanks for the support Glenn, guess this would be a good time to put those performance mods to use. Now I can test to see if my speed bump dodging skills in parking lots has improved my car handling.
