Default is no front plate legal in NJ?

i just removed my front license plate on my SC300 and clean the dirt and it looks really good. but awile ago my dad was pulled over for not having a front plate on his GS. i know some nj automotive laws have changed, but does anyone know if it is still illegal to drive without a front plate in NJ?

No it's not

Standard issue plates
When you title and register a vehicle, you will receive two license plates one for the front and one for the rear of the car (trailers, motorized bicycles and motorcycles only receive one).

They must be clean and visible at all times. Even though the rear plate is reflectorized, it must be illuminated to make it visible from 50 feet away at night. If your license plate holders obscure or conceal any lettering on the license plate, you are subject to a fine.

MVC no longer issues registration decals that adhere to the upper right-hand corner of license plates on passenger vehicles. Decals are still issued for motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Customers with passenger vehicles may remove the decals from their license plates, as long as the license plate is not damaged.

I didn't put it on but I do have it on my dash though and my handy POBA card in my wallet too. =D Time for that badge on the windshield.

No, not in any state and think about what you are doing when you put that nice thin piece of metal with a sharp edge right at neck level and then you are hit head on....

If you get creative you can figure out a way to mount it. Found this with a quick search

Or use this design and create your own.

Does your state require a front license plate? Do you HATE the idea of drilling holes into your beloved MINI bumper? Do you want to avoid the ticket from the ever-friendly traffic officer? Here is the answer to your dilemma.
This "No Holes" License Plate Bracket (LPB) does not require you to drill into your front bumper. Instead, it utilizes a custom machined bolt that screws into the existing towhook hole. All parts are made from Stainless Steel to ensure no rust. The mounting hardware utilizes nylock nuts which will not loosen from vibration. The plate attachment screws are button head socket cap screws for a nice clean look.

The Vertical Adjustment Bars allows 6 vertical positions that you can mount your plate.

Select from the pull-down menu:

2002-2006 R50 MINI Cooper and R53 Cooper S models and 2005-2008 R52 MINI Convertibles,

or

2007+ R56 Hardtops and 2008+ R55 CLUBMANs

It's not legal and I put it on my passenger side dash. I use my F as daily and I have nobody sitting in my car 97% of the time. Btw my plate is still inside the plastic that it came with, it may not be sharp but like oohpapi said it's still dangerous.

if u have holes in ur bumper, just run a plate then...why run a risk of getting a ticket? also what oohpapi was referring to...if u were to get into a head on collision of some sort, dont u think the plate that is sitting on your dash, can projectile backwards towards your passengers head?

I think the simplest answer is no, it's Illegal in NJ. If you're caught with it, you get a ticket for no front plate showing. Court will not dismiss this, and they will charge you for it.

lock please?

Thread needs to be kept civil, or it will be locked. In a nutshell, a question was asked, and several answers were given. If the answers fit your particular situation, then absorb and absolve. If not, then broaden your thinking and absolve as you see fit. Everyone is here to help one another and to give advice; so combative comments are not necesary.
