Man, we're not doing too hot this month with the number of participants in this thread

Anyway, shot some cars yesterday. Wasn't my first time shooting cars that cost less than my setup, but they were indeed the smallest (taken with Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS...wish I had a macro!)

I'll share a couple of shots. Both shot with Nikon D700 and Nikon 24-70 f/2.8

1) From 4th of July at my friend's lakehouse. Every year about 30-40 people show up and our friends from Florida bring about $2,000 worth of the good fireworks and we have at it. Usually an armada of boats watches our display but alas, this year we did it in the middle of a thunderstorm. It's also too bad that damn tree is in the way.

Boom! by Greg Ranallo Photography, on Flickr

2) Also did a maternity shoot last weekend. I rarely dabble in portrait photography of any kind (I'm an action junkie) but it's not so bad!

Nice Cuttooth, you live in such a great place for landscape photos.

Two quic ones from today's Longo Lexus-Scion Pursuit 4 meet. Shot the whole day with the 40mm on the 5D-C, 462 images. This is a very nice lens. Wish the DOF was a bit shallower here, this would have smoothed this image over but it can be done in post. 4 LF-A's and twp ran the 1/8 track. Such a harmonious musical engine and in tandem it was

Gave this one a massaging today. The shots from this meet are not my usual style, I wanted to get some practice exploring some of the features in Lightroom 4.4. Does the necessary simplistic adjustments and the program can be heavy handed if need be. Gradient filters to adjust sky exposure while adjusting the color temp. The usual clarity, vibrance bumps and knocking up contrast 2 notches. Slight adjustment of the tone curve. 5D-C was in standard mode.

The BMW had a metallic wrap but because I was wearing polarized sunglasses it just seemed like a very glossy paint job.

Looks good. Love the first shot. Got a few questions if you don't mind...
1. What f stop were you on?
2.Were you using a filter?
3. What is your favorite tool to manipulate the clouds?

Cuttooth,
Great shots as always.

Here is one I recently took. Please let me know how to improve this shot. I'm still learning so all comments are welcome and appreciated. It'd be nice if the street light were on.

This is just me...

1) Get rid of the street lamp. In this case it would be a PITA with the different levels of clouds in the background.
2) If I was aiming to make the car look aggressive I'd probably reduce the exposure a little bit in post and add some vignetting. If I was not aiming to make the car look aggressive I'd add a little more exposure and fill lighting to bring out that front end a little more.
3) I'd try to bring out more details in the cloud.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know why I was stuck with the street lamp. I remember reading one rule of thumbs (thanks onexcite) is to not leave a stick in the middle of your frame. I did try to bring out more details in the grille and clouds too and I think that's probably as much as I could. I took off the street lamp and uploaded the original for reference. It does look better without the pole. Thanks.

1. My work computer is down so I don't have the exact f stop, that day I shot it 5.6 to 7. On the 40mm it has a broad DOF past 4.5.

2. A skylight.

3. The raw files can be heavily manipulated in Lightroom. Even if the shadows are blocked up or certain highlights are blown, the image data is there to adjust. Applied a gradient filter to the half the frame and backed the exposure down about -1 stop. Adjusted the color/kelvin temp into the bluish range to taste.

Lots of tutroials on YT, this guy covers it:
