I now use Mobil 1, but hold on for a minute. My 91 LS has 140K miles. I bought it when it just turned 111K.
When I changed the timing belt, I also changed all the front oil seals, as they are all exposed during the belt replacement. The seals are the front crankshaft seal, and both cam shaft seals. I also changed the rear engine seal after it developed a leak when I first bought the car. I wanted to clean up the inside of the engine after 10 years of varnish, so I added 1 qt of Marvel Mystery oil for 1000 miles to clean up the varnish as well as clean up the valve lifters etc. Marvel Mystery oil is known to contain some mild solvents to help clean up the insides of an engine. I then changed to Mobil 1, and started using factory Toyota oil & air filters.
I frequently run Chevron Techron fuel additive to help clean up the carbon deposits on the valves and pistons. My Lexus runs like a dream, but I have spent a lot of money on many other items, and have a few more to get done.

i know how you feel.. i'm avoiding synthetics because of potential leaks.. I'm thinking about using Toyota Filters along with Vavoline VR-1 20w-50.. all the standard oils look the same though

It sounds as if your 91 LS400 should be near perfect mechanically. I am curious to know what kind of gas mileage you get, as a reference standard. Mine fluctuates, but I have gotten as low as 17.9 mpg in city driving and as high as 26 mpg on the highway. I keep mine as clos to perfect as I can, I have 218,000 miles on it and I run Valvoline MaxLife 5W30, but I am considering trying synthetic again, I tried it before and a rear main seal leak appeared, but I have had the rear main seal and the timing belt /water pump/seals and idlers replaced for a few months now.

1990 LS400 with 232K miles-continuing the original owners (my friend) protocol (i've only had it for 800 miles) of using Amsoil 10W-30W synthetic oil with a Lexus filter. No leaks,no burning of oil.Emissions numbers read as good as when the car was new as i have the yearly readouts from when the car was purchased through the last year! (mandatory in NY)

I too have been using AMSOIL Synthetic oil for over 100,000 miles. I purchased it it June 2004 with 59,000 miles. The history of the car showed it was serviced with Mobil 1 at the dealership beginning at 5,000 miles. The inside of the engine was immaculate, so I bought it.
I changed to AMSOIL Iimmediately, and never looked back. I am due for another timing belt change next week and I do notplan to change the cam seals. I simply do not burn oil, and the seals looked great at 90,000 miles. I purcheased the seals and will change them if I HAVE to, but I don't think I will have to.
I personally have a feeling that oil breakdown is responsible for leaking seals, and extended oil changes with conventional oil contributes to that.
Since I have used synthetic oil on every car I've owned for the last 35 years, I have NEVER had to change a leaking valve cover gasket.
I am hoping this trend continues.
