Question RX300 service manuals

I am planning to get the service manuals for my '99 RX300. I noticed that there are 2 volumes.

Can somebody tell me if it is worth to buy both volumes and what do each volume contain?

Thanks!

I bought them for my 93 GS300 and there were actually three:

-Engine and chassis
-Body and Electrical

and one more small one for Electrical Wiring Diagrams (I doubt you'll need that)

The first two are actually a set, and I think should be purchased as such.

Hope this helps...

I bought those two volumes for my 99 RX before I left the country. For lack of a Lexus dealer nearby, these two volumes have been invaluable in dealing with Toyota. However, for stateside, the only true value is if you are taking the car to an independent mechanic or wish to do your own repairs or upgrades (which I have done). As I recall, they were pretty expensive manuals.

I have found Volume 2 more helpful than Volume 1. Volume 1 includes the following:

Introduction
Maintenance
Preparations
Service Specifications
Diagnostics
Alphabetical Index

Volume 1 is relevant if you have and OBD2 sensor or if you are a true Lexus mechanic. However, it does include useful information on tools and parts needed in some cases, along with wiring schematics for various electrical parts.

Volume 2 is probably what you will use most. It has step-by-step pictures with accompanying instructions on how to do all sorts of repairs. It is very well written but enough to be a Lexus for Dummies that any one of us can understand. It covers the following topics:

Engine Mechanical
Emission Control
SFI (Fuel System)
Cooling
Lubrication
Ignition
Starting
Charging
Automatic Transaxle
Propeller Shaft
Suspension and Axle
Brake
Steering
Supplemental Restraint System
Body Electrical
Body Air Conditioning
Alphabetical Index

My local Toyota dealer found this manual very useful with its pictures, since they could not understand a word of English. However, Volume 2 will answer the questions of how to change that oil filter, change your brake pads, how body panels fit together and what are the torque specifications for each bolt on your fine vehicle. After reading through Volume 2, I seriously believed that I could fix the Lexus myself. Unfortunately, you will find that you often need special tools or diagnostic equipment for specialized areas.

What special tools does it list for replacing the timing belt? I am going to order a manual but will probably not have it in time.

Thanks!!!

Now I know I will not start working on the RX until I have the manuals in my hand. I may need to manufacture a special tool or wrench for the job.

Still waiting for my manuals....

Anyone want to sell a set of used factory service manuals for a 99 RX?
