Idling car for an hour a day

Police do it all the time and then sell their used cars to cab companies who drive them another 200,000 miles. It will just eat up more gas and maybe you should change your oil per the severe service schedule, i.e. more often.

There is no specific modification to a modern automotive engine to let it idle for long periods, the efi system controls it we have computerized electronic controls now remember. The only down fall is its just more time running and thus more wear and tear on it that is totally unnecessary. The wiki link says "May be modified" and that is more for power, cooling system is mentioned and all that could be added there is a larger capacity radiator and again to handle more power, low loading requires less heat rejection.

I doubt it as long as the engine has the proper oil weight in it, car engines are designed to be idled, for long periods if necessary and as others have said cops do it all the time, truck drivers idle their engines sometimes for 8-10 hours a night over and over. If the car is never driven and only idled in one spot over and over then that might lead to some issues.
