Default CHECK ENGINE LIGHT..now you see now you don't.

I have my 99 for less than a month and probably have 200miles that I put on it.Today my check engine light showed up while I was driving. It was not on when I started it this morning. On one of my stops, I opened the gas cap and put it back on and re tightened.. The light still was on but after awhile it disappeared That was just a wild guess/diagnostic! My question is is that a sign that something is is failing somewhere?? Or I hope gas cap needs to be replaced soon.

Thanks in advance for any reply...

I would suggest that when it comes back on, go get your car scan for the code so you will know what it is rather than just assuming it is that.

The light doesn't have to be on to pull codes - the ECU will store history codes that can be retrieved unless the ECU is completely reset...

that being said, if the light is off (and it hasn't burned out), then whatever was wrong isn't causing a problem at this time, and you can most likely ignore it...

to make sure the check engine light is not burnt out, simply turn the key to the run position without starting the car - if the check engine light comes on, then you are good...

Thanks for your replies.I just checked and the check engine bulb is working. So I guess no worries for now. I have a feeling I did not tighten it properly on my last fill up and/or the seal on the gas cap is failing. Again, hoping that's it. A truly remarkable car!
