Dealership Overfilled Engine Oil
Hey,
Just checked my engine oil level and it appears the dealership overfilled it. It looks like its almost an inch above the full line. Is this going to hurt my car at all and should I take it back and get them to drain a little out? I know if its way overfilled it can hurt things, but i don't know how much way over it would have to be.
Thanks in advance!

It is a 14mm socket. Drain out about 3/4 of a quart. Check and drain more if needed.
It is not advisable to run the engine with the oil overfilled; the internal pressures may damage the internal oil seals.

This also happens when the filter has not been changed. Not saying that is what happend but I have seen that happen before. Put in recommended amount and forget to change the filter always overfills. I change my own oil for many reasons. I have even seen a mechanic drain the oil put in a new filter and then forget to put oil back in. Blown engine after 1/2 mile. I do as much maintenance as I can just to avoid problems.

When there's no or little oil in the engine, the oil pressure light will be on.
My Toyota and Lexus dealers routinely overfill by about 1/4 quart. My old mechanic in NYC always filled exactly to the full mark with 5 1-qt. bottles. One inch over is way too much.

Reason for that 1/4-qt overfill is techs fill with oil capacity (6 qts on my V8, for instance) listed in the manual, but they don't let the oil drain completely because they want to finish ASAP, so a 1/4-qt stays inside. I always let my car drain until nothing comes out. Good day.

Hennessy, Lexus in Atlanta forgot to put oil in my wifes ES300. I now always check the oil level and check for any visable leaks before I drive away, no mater who is doing the oil change.

I had to circle the block to get back to the dealership. When I pulled into the service bay I asked for the service manager. When we popped the hood their was a wrench laying on the engine and no oil in the engine. You know when they pull them out from service they run them through the car wash then dry them off all with the engine running. The dealership paid for the service and gave me another free 90K service that was coming up. The warranteed the engine for 120K miles it was at 85K at this time. I moved half way across the country when it had 100K on it and at 110K it started smoking at start-up. I wasn't going to drive from Missouri to Atlanta to argue with the Lexus dealer so I just traded it in. Lesson learned, should of just kept driving until the engine locked up ( they would of had to replace it ) always check the oil and look for leaks after anyone changes your oil. Even the Lexus dealer. I think part of the problem with a Lexus dealer is that for oil/filter changes they have a machanic do the work and they are involved with other things. When a place just has a oil guy and that is all they do they get into a routine and wouldn't make this type of mistake. JMHO

Thanks for all the replies guys! I talked to a bunch of different mechanics about it and none seemed to think that it was overfilled enough to do any damage. I drained out about 3/4 of a quart and that took it to the proper level. I had driven it for about 300 km or 187 miles home before I noticed it was too full. Hopefully I don't see any problems spring up in the future. The dealer has given me some free labour for my troubles. I'll be sure to check the levels immediately after service from now on or maybe I'll go back to just doing it myself. Seems like nothing these days is done right unless you do it yourself.
