What's the deal with V8 valves?
Hey guys. I know the valves are mechanically actuated, but don't know if shim-under-bucket or threaded adjusters (I doubt any other kind). My question is that they must require a check (and adjustment if necessary) at some point, right? Is that at the same time as the belt change? I hope somebody has done it here to make some comments.
Is that a time constraint on the belt change, like 90K miles or "x" years, whichever comes first? I would like to change it at 90K, but I don't know if age damages the belt as well. Any ideas what the "x" should be?
Thanks guys!

I cannot help you figuring out what type of the valve system our cars have.
On the other hand, I've done a valve adjustment on my 95 SC400 at 60K, as my service rep told me. He also told me that the valve adjustment on SCs is required more than on the other Lexus models, I guess because the valves get out of spec easier. When I asked him if I will have to do the adjustment at 120K, he told me that most likely it wouldn’t be necessary, unless of course there is that need.
Timing belt I will be doing at 90K, and a water pump at the same time. My service rep knows that I like to drive my SC with enjoyment, if you get my point, but he still recommends timing belt at 90K.
Hopefully this will give you some ideas,
Chris K.

Thanks for your response Chris. I used to have a '96 SC400, but I hated the transmission (I needed to practically floor the pedal to get it to downshift, even in power mode, and by 20mph it already was in 4th), so I traded it in for the GS when it had 4K miles.
Valve actuation is the same on all those engines, with the exception the GS has variable intake-valve timing. That along with 5 speeds makes it a lot quicker than the SC, but it still hesitates to downshift, albeit a lot less (e-shift came to the rescue, especially on holding the gears longer).
I'll order the service manual to answer myself a lot of questions I have, especially on the transmission, which the owner's manual doesn't even mention the need to replace the fluid, and I don't know if it has a serviceable filter that requires removal of the pan.
Have a great weekend.
