Strange A/C problem: A/C does not function if car is in direct sunlight
When the front end of my 1995 ES300 (145k miles) is parked in direct sunlight in 70 deg F or higher temperatures, the A/C fails to function and blows out warm air instead after I start the car and drive.
However, if the front end of the car is covered by shade, the A/C will function even if the outside temperature is near 100.
Any ideas as to what is causing this problem in sunlight? Sorry, I do not know much about auto HVAC systems.

Is it possible to determine if the compressor is engaging? Can you feel or hear the clutch? If not, the pressure low switch is most likely preventing clutch from engaging. The sun is heating the condensor and in front of is the switch.
Initally, suggest to have the pressures checked at an A/C specialty shop to insure you're not in need for additional freon.

Does the "front end" include the dash?
If it's working in 100-degree heat in the shade, then obviously there is sufficent freon.
On the dashboard of my car is a small black plastic dome, which is a sensor that works in conjunction with the climate control.
If you have one on your dash, experiment with placing that sensor in and out of the sun- it may be faulty.

Sticking expansion valves are very common on 92-96 ES models.
This has been discussed numerous times.
Replacement of the valve is not easy. It is located on the back (firewall) side of the evaporator.
Replacement should cost about $400-500 at an independent AC shop and as much as $700-800 at a Lexus dealership.
