Anyone try a MAGNETIC OIL DRAIN PLUG?

The idea works, BUT the underlying thing is that if you have metal particles in your engine oil, you got bigger things to worry about. The OEM drain plug is slightly magnetic anyway. Rear end and Transmission drain plugs are super magnetic from the factory because those fluids contain loose or chipped off gear teeth, which happens very frequently. Of the thousands of engine oil drains I've done, I don't ever remember seeing metal particles coming out. I have a magnetic stick (basically a long flexing stick with a strong metal on the end) that I use to fish out the drain plug when I accidentally drop it into the dirty oil drum....and it doesn't pick up metal particles. The only time it does is during tranny fluid changes. Those will almost always pick up metal particles.

I think brass is the one that won't stick from my recollection.
This is from my tranny plug a few weeks agon and it will collect a little bit of residue at the bottom. RX300 trannies also have 3 magnets in the transmission pan that collect primarily steel.

But the nasty award goes to my rear differential plug (shown at 107K miles) that had metal filings and gray residue all over the thing.
I never noticed anything much on the oil drain plug.

There isn't alot of room in the crankcase. I would be afraid it may strike a rod or the crankshaft with the magnet. Then you've done it !
This is why you use the best of oil filters.

i used that same one. i never had a problem until i tightened it a little too much and the threads got crushed. lucky for me, my oil pan didnt strip..just the bolt did. i did notice very small amounts of gunk at first. after a few changes..no more gunk, maybe its because i use k&n oil filters now??
