How many miles for changing differential fluid?
Hi,
Ive got a 2001 GS300
only got 19500 miles on it
im reading the canadian lexus dealership maintenance schedule
they said to change differential fluid every 32,000KM which is 19883 miles
and thats coming up for me soon
but that seems a bit too short of an interval... whats more proper?
should i follow the dealership schedule?

That is way too soon. I have seen 40K miles for an inspection and change if necessary on some vehicles, but Tammy's figure is a good one, too.
When I changed out my differential and transfer case at 107K miles (used Royal Purple gear oil though some also use Mobil 1 gear oil), after looking at that stuff in both areas, I was pretty positive it had never been changed out, at least since I have owned it since 40K or so. Rear differential had metal filings and the transfer case had an awful smell.
The issue with inspection, and I have no clue as to how they do this, must be related to opening the fill hole and examining smell and color somehow.

Standard protocol is to expect the differential fluid every few thousand miles (either 10k or 15k; I don't remember)--they don't need changing every 15k. 30k would be an excellent interval, but it can be streteched to 60k+ if you're on a budget. The gear oil in the differential doesn't wear out very quickly in normal conditions. I just changed mine at 75k to Red Line synthetic, which is widely considered to be the #1 gear oil on the market, although it's a tad pricey. Mobil 1 is an excellent choice as well, but I chose to spend a few dollars more to opt for the best on the market.
