Default Mcgard Wheel Lock Key Set

FYI, a MCGARD MASTER WHEEL LOCK KEY SET for LEXUS is for sale up on Ebay (item#4633126142). Perhaps somebody with Lexus reading this would like to try to stop the sale, or one of you Lexus mechanics need one.

I recently got a reply on the RX300 forum from tunedRX300 who said:

"BTW, McGard wheel locks can be easily taken off w/o key with vice grips. These wheel locks are not going to prevent real thieves, even if they are stupid."

So, maybe it's not as serious as I had thought. I don't know.

hmm weird
i think that if the nuts are properly torqued, they would be hard to get off without keys

but of course, there are thieves out there that have the tools and knowledge to break into just about everything and anything they want

if there is a lock, theres gotta be more than 1 way to open it...

but i hope my investment in mcgard isnt a waste

has anyone on CL has had their wheels stolen even with lock nuts?

When I got my 01 GS and 06 GS with G-Spider wheels the first thing I did was remove the wheel locks and put on regular lug nuts. Those locks are useless and it's a pain if you got flat tire.

The tool companies make some special socket the will fit on the broken wheel lock and remove it without wheel lock key.

Default Not Stolen, but removed without key

Back in 1991 I bought a new Ford Taurus which had the McGards on it. Never had a problem with them but in 1999 gave the car to my Mother-In-Law and got a 1998 Lexus GS300. Anyway back to the story. In 2005 my M-I-L needed new tires on the Taurus so had her take it into Firestone dealer. Dealer called me and said that the key was shot or that the slots were too worn, so they just drilled them out a bit and used a screw remover. So yes they can be removed without the key, but would imagine the process would take a bit of time which thieves would not have or wouldn't want to take. Also, note that there supposed to be over 200 combinations of the groove so it's not like 1 tool fits all.

These special designed sockets come in 4 sizes and it will go right on the locking lug nut itself, not on the groove.

the point is to deter and prevent theft. of course if a thief was given all the time in the world he/she could most likely take off anything. Have you ever tried to take off a wheel lock without the key? it's bananas. even with a regular socket on an impact gun, you'll chew up your socket easily. and it takes time. more than enough time....
