Default What do you think about oil

Hey, I was wondering I should switch to synthetic oil. My 97 es300 is a little over 68,000 miles. I've heard that syn oil can be bad or good, also i tried searching the topic but didn't come to any conclusions. So are there any pros or cons that anyone can inform me of. Also what would be any symptoms of sludge building up in my engine. Thanks in advance.

Only true way to check for sludge is to remove a valve cover and look. Question is, are you prepared to have the engine torn down to repair it $$$$ or best left unknown. Kinda like ...Life.

dude, a search on "synthetic" will hit up with hundreds of threads posing the pros and cons that you ask for. Your question, like many times in the past, opens a pandora's box or arguements, heated debates and reposts of known opinions and facts.

The best conclusion is "do what makes you feel most comforable with your car"

A second search on "sludge" will give you information about symptoms. There are even threads with pictures.

Moderators, please close this thread before we go through the age old oil debate again.

o.k.. i have read enought threads in here to come up wtih something..
when i first did the switch on my car. it runs a little smoother. engine is a little calm. just a little difference.
the thing .. the price difference between them is huge.. if you're one of those guys who love to do things with your own hands and work on your car.. i'll stay with the regular oil.. changing it every 3K or even less gives me a peace of mind. =)

Rather than going through a debate of dino vs. synth, the better topic of discussions are what grade of oil, what type of oil filter, when to change the oil. Synthetic is a no-brainer in itself.

Stick with normal oil, running synthetic is pointless unless you race/boost.

I get synthetic oil for all my lexus. 10w40 for higher miles and 10W30 for my GS and LX and IS since they all under 55K miles. I don't race my GS too, so 10W30 will give me enough protection.
I even went 10W60 for my SC4 in summer time before, 120+ degree here.

I agree with Steve! We don't need anymore synthetic vs. dino oil threads.....it's been beaten to death!

I heard an ad that Castrol GTX protects against sludge. How does it do this?

The same way all other oils do. By changing your oil, you are protecting against sludge.

It was an ad. They are telling you this because they want you to believe that Castrol GTX is better in this respect, but it isn't necessarily any better than Mobil or Exxon or Havoline or Pennzoil........
