Lexus Dealer's estimate on repair
Here is the estimate I just got from my dealership for my 2000 rx 300
front brake pads 60
front brake rotors 97 each x2
2 labor hours @99 total 450
rear brake pads
rear brake rotors
2 labor hours total 460
front differential re seal 50
with removal of trans.
labor 16 hours @ 99.00/hr $1,634
rear main oil seal, if we have the trans out 20.00
1 hour labor @ 99 total $120
total is $2,664 plus tax.
Should I let the dealer do the work or is this just too much to pay.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

As always, the dealership rips off the common man. Take it to a mechanic you trust and have them do it. $2664 before tax for the amount of work they are doing is just plain ludicrous.

If they just replace the rotors and pads, then labor should be at 1.5 hr.
For the transmission, most of the labor guide call for 9.9 hrs, because they have to get the engine support( special servie equiptment) hook up from the top. Then drop the craddle or subframe/uni-body, which is support the engine and transmission and part of the body frame for the RX, Highlander, Camray,Avalon, Seinna Van and ES. I don't know which differentail seal you're talking about. Please give more detail about the seal and the location of the seal( if you can).

That's too much...you can check with a Toyota dealer for a quote. My 2001 ES had a rear main seal leak so I called Toyota dealer and was quoted $650 ($30 part, $620 labor). For my peace of mind, I also ordered pretty much a 90K service to do the following:
Replace timing belt
Replace drive belts
Replace front crank seal
Replace cam seal
Transmision fluid flush + clean trans fluid screen
Coolant flush
Oil change
Replace wiper blades
New front fuel/air O2 sensor
The total is around $1350 including the leak repair...I can't imagine how much it would be at Lexus dealer. One thing really odd is when the service consultant was test driving the car after the service, he called me saying the check engine light would stay on even after they reset it. They checked my O2 sensor and found nothing wrong with it, but once they put in a new sensor the check engine light went away. So after bargaining with the dealer, they agreed to install the new O2 sensor at half of their cost ($70+). I think the car should be good to go for a while and it drives beautifully.

I thought Toyota dealer is not allowed to service Lexus ..at least, that's what I was told when I was checking if any toyota dealer could do the 60k mile service for my mom's 98' ES300.
Since Toyota labor/parts are way cheaper than that of Lexus...if they are allowed to do that, why ES owners would bring their ES to lexus dealer? they could have the same things done at a toyota dealer at much cheaper price.

around 250 to replace pads/machine rotors
around 420 (high estimate) to include rotors...
16 hours for the resealing the front diff... sounds like a ripoff... ask your consultant to see a mitchell flat rate manual (or whatever they are basing their estimates on)

Yes. I drove the LFA.

Since its not a simple r&r transmission job, it should pay more than the usual 8-10 hours we get. it is a differential reseal, which means the trans and diff need to be seperated. I still think 16 hours is way too much, but i do agree that it requires more than the simple r&r fee. I would probably charge 12 hours for something like that, assuming its a four wheel drive rx...
I also agree that 2.0 to r&r pads/rotors is excessive. 1.5 is more than sufficient.

the labor rate is high, but for hours, you will get that at any lexus/ prolly toyota dealership. the tech can do it in 4 or 5 hours, but they get paid for ALOT more than that. its how the game is played. try calling a toyota dealership and see what ya come up with,.

A decent mechanic can do both front and rear brakes and rotors for 1.5 hours. It just a few more easy screws to remove the rotors after removing calipers for pad replacement. Talk about major rip off.

Pohanka Lexus quoted me $770 to machine the front & rear brake rotors and replace the all pads on my GS.
I bought my own pads from discounttoyotaparts.com ($82) and then Midas did the work $450. Save almost $250.

165 labor per axle(cars and RX, more on 470s)to replace the pads and machine the rotors... which translates into $330 labor + parts =]
Longo Lexus < Midas (seeing that the less than is what you want, in this case)
