Replacing Egr tube
My 97 LS400 120K was diagnosed by a Lexus dealer of a leaking egr tube (exhaust fumes inside when heater was on) and gave me an estimate of $1400, the tranny had to be dropped to replace a $100 tube, plus also re-doing the rear main seal...a local import mechanic (very well repsected) quoted $800, and the intake manifold had to be removed...Anybody have any recommendations or which way is correct or if both are ok

One of the ex-moderator here name Sooner got some trick to do it without remove the transmission. He hasn't been on this site for a long time.
The way I do, I alway remove the transmission and replace the rear main seal at the same time. The EGR tube is located behind the engine( by the firewall) on the exhaust manifold and the bolts that hold it on the manifold is very tight to get to. But you can do it either remove the trans. or the intake or if you can contact Sooner and you have some tools then it will save a lot of money.

My guys replaced my EGR tube in my '91 LS400 and didn't use anything more than a two foot long socket extension as I remember. It was tight, but he did not have to remove the transmission or anything of that caliber. Good luck!

My burns did heal , I don't even see the scar anymore!

Not much fun. The schematic showed only the 4 bolts referenced by Sooner in previous post as accessible from top or bottom. The real world throws you a nasty curve on a 94 LS, The one he describes as in the back of the block will consume most of your time. Above the passenger side cat you will find 2 studs which are easy to remove from below, towards the firewall on top of the engine there are 2 bolts which are a simple task , but the bolt on the back of the engine above the transmission,( which did not appear on the schematic which I utilized as a reference) that Sooner mentions is an absolute bastard, Very little room between it and the firewall. I would by no means describe it's location as "visible".
3 bolts , 2 studs, 5 connection points total!
RESULTS: Sounds much better , but I had better see a mileage reward before my burns heal. Not kidding!!!
94 LS
Part # 25601-50010
price $116.14 from Carson
Good news is that Sooner is absolutely correct. It is possible to replace this piece on a 94 without dropping the Tranny or removing the intake manifold
