Compressor for Home use
Hi guys,
For those in the know or has one, what is a decent set of specs for a compressor to be used for DIY on the car? I'm not trying to set up shop so I don't need (at least I don't think so) a big heavy duty one that will stand up to everyday use. On the other hand, I don't want an underpowered one that won;t be of much use either.
Any info/advice is welcomed.
Thanks.

I own a 5hp model with enuf scfm to run a decent 1/2" impact wrench and maybe a DA sander to do some body work.. Don't short change yourself or you will be burning electricity and waiting around to get compressor charged back up..

My analogy is like HP, you can't have too much compressor. Air sanders, grinders, spray guns use the most at 6-10 cfm @ 90psi typically. Ratchets, impact guns are usually around 3-5 cfm.
Roughly; a 4-5HP 20+ gallon roll-around model will be sufficient to drive the impact guns and rachects in a home shop. You will be able to have brief moments using a sander or grinder but count on the compressor having to cycle on and the tool will not be at optimal performance at the reduced pressure. $300-$500
If you have 220V electrical in your garage, a vertical 60 or 80 gallon upwards of 12cfm @ 90 psi will pretty much cover most things. $800+.

i have a 5.2 hp 4.9 cfm 150psi 25gall standup compressor in my garage .. i have used this unit for everthing with my car from brakes to compressing springs .. it powers well and the 25 gal tank is more then enough for any car job .. if i need to use my impact gun for a real hard job , i can adjust the min pressure in the tank to be equal with max cap and the motor will run giving me about 120-140psi constantly
got it from homedepot husky brand
