Default WT-i: I need some help!

I posted this on the LS400-430 board and one of the other members suggested I ask you. I just picked up a '95 LS400 yesterday and the check engine light came on as I was driving home. Figures, huh?

Anyway, I start researching how to pull the codes and find on several sites that only '96 and above have the OBD ll ports and that I can use the jumper wire on my '95. I get under the dash and low and behold, I've got a port with a cover marker OBD ll and an additional round, white plastic port marked DIAGNOSTIC. Okay, I say. I must have an OBD ll car. But when I pulled the cap from the black port, there are only a few terminals that are occupied. The build date of the car was 5/95.

Any ideas as to what I have? How do I evalute what the issue causing the check engine light is?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mike, your 95 LS got the OBDII system. You will need to go to the dealer to get the code read out. Let us know what's going on.

Thanks for the quick response!

Can I buy OBD ll analyzer and diagnose this myself? Any recommendations for a particular unit?

Wow, you are talking about at least $1,500.00 for the cheapest one with out any adapter. I wanted one myself, but then again, no thanks. I'm using the one at the dealership, but I think it will save me a lot of time when I have to do some diagnostic and I don't have to walk around the shop looking for the Scan tool. Then, I found out it will cost me around 3K for everything, that when I think walking around is a good exercise...

Okay, I guess I am confused. There is a OBD ll scan tool at Pep Boys for $149+ tax and there are several handheld units on Ebay for that amount and more. Are these not the same thing? I hate to buy one only to find out that this is not what I need.

Here is the Ebay link. Replace the ** with tt.
