Curious, indeed, to learn what you find out.

For what it's worth, I decided to look at the manual for a vehicle known to have this functionality, the 2014 RX350. Based on the wording in the name of the feature - i.e., Power back door opening operation using the back door opener button - I suspect the LX simply does not offer this. The language in the RX owner's manual is pretty unambiguous about this feature; the language in the LX manual doesn't even hint at power opening via that button.

I am going to write a book titled "When loaner cars I drive have more cool features than my own car"!

Here is a link to the relevant section of the manual. It's on page 6 of the PDF.

Very interesting. I agree with you on the rentals having more features thing for sure!

I do not understand why Lexus did away with this on the LX unless it is for safety. Maybe people were being pinned against their garage door by the rear door and Lexus removed this feature for our own safety! Many one of the new government regulations mandated the removal of this feature to save energy? Who knows but I am still going to give my service manager some cr^p if he can't fix it.

Just kidding, the world will not end but it should be OUR option.

Happy New Year to all of you!

ok, guys, just got off the phone with the dealer about the lift gate question. According to the diagnostic specialist at the dealership it IS a programmable option.

This means that you can take your 570 to your dealer and they can program via Techstream the top hatch part of the lift gate to automatically open when depressing the little button under the lip from the outside of vehicle.

This is a great convenience and I am not sure why it isn't done in the beginning, but anyway I am sure we will all enjoy the convenience.

Happy New Year,
Dave

HUGE WOOT, WOOT, WOOT!

I figured it could be doen as all of my LX units prior to this have opened with a touch of the hidden button! Thanks very much for getting to the bottom of it and I will be getting mine reprogrammed at 5K.

Just wanted to let some of you know that I have scheduled my 5K service for Friday the 30th. At that visit they are supposed to use their Techstream to make the cargo door automatic opening when depressing the little button on the door.
So, a week from now I can let everyone know if it really works

I'm betting it will work perfectly.

I will be doing the same at my 5K.

I am picking up my vehicle today as the dealership left it out for me. We are out of town and I will post tonight if they were able to get the lift gate to work as we all want. When I dropped it off Friday for the 5K mile service they didn't seem to be troubled by what I wanted, so it sure will be convenient to have it available.

My dealer assured me that they would make it work at my 5K. They said it was no problem whatsoever. I only have 2800 miles so far so it will be another month before my 5K.

Well, bad news on my end. Kinda disappointed in my service. I took the car in on Friday and in addition to the 5K mile service I walked the service rep around to the back of the vehicle and explained to her that I wanted 'this' little button to open the cargo door automatically from the outside. So, here's what she wrote on the service sheet:

"customer want the back hatch to open automatically"

Now, folks, that is not what I told her and her statement is very general. When I picked up the car on Sunday noon the first thing I did was try the cargo door and NO GO!

I have no idea what they did if anything other than make sure the button on the dash worked and the fob button worked on the cargo door.

The service department WILL be getting a call first thing in the morning. I was really hyped to have this work and my dealership is 2 hours away.

Communication, communication, communication.

Wish she had written up the orders before I left, because from this point on I will insist on seeing the wording they send to the mechanic.

sorry I could not report a positive

This is such a common occurrence... Thankfully, I don't have this problem with my service advisor, who is nothing short of awesome, but I've dealt with it plenty, especially with other brands.

Quick story... I just had my snow thrower serviced. I told them "I have trouble pull starting a cold engine. The engine will turn but not start, as if something is off with the carburetor, and I need to use the electric starter to crank it for a while". They wrote: "engine won't pull when cold". Response: "pull system is supposed to be tight when cold". Sigh...

Now, there is a reason I am posting here... I have access to the beta Carista app for iOS for testing purposes, and at this point, am only waiting for the WiFi OBD2 module I need to arrive. As soon as I have everything this week, I will go to work on the wife's LX and shall report back. Again, I am not too optimistic based on what the manual says, but will definitely try like hell!

Greg, you FL warm-weather creature, do you know what a snow thrower is?! Sorry, don't mind me, I'm just jealous because we are getting more snow.

Snow is rare but no unseen here. Family is from Wisconsin so I am all to familiar. Love the snow mobiles and yet respect them for their danger. Those crazy people hop from bar to bar, drunk for entertainment. Never seen a snow blower in real life but they look like work.

I hope I get better results at the Lexus dear in a few more thousand miles at my 5K. I have know my service rep for many years now and will be very disappointed if they fail to reprogram the rear door. I have been told it is an easy fix. I, for the life of me, do not understand why they made the lazy cargo door the default! It is not like it flew up and would knock you over!

Default Bad news?

So I recently received my OBD II WiFi adapter to use with the Carista app for iPhone, which I am beta testing and allows for both diagnostics and customizations. I finally tried it yesterday, and it was fantastic to see all the options to change door, light, HVAC and other options.

Unfortunately, for the button in the rear, the only option listed had to do with unlocking functionality, not power-open, offering three choices: off (i.e., no unlocking at all), extended push (the default, I think), and two pushes. There was nothing else.

Carista doesn't necessarily offer 100% of all programmable options, and they certainly have added more with subsequent releases of the software (at least for other Lexus models), so I will check with them. However, as I had mentioned before, given the language in the manual (vis-a-vis the language in the manual for the RX, which we know has this feature), and now this, I am only hoping for a miracle when Greg brings the beast in for its 5k.

Let me understand this instead of pushing a button on the remote in my pocket you need one of the buttons under the back latch to auto raise the hatch?
