Default $1,200 Windshield?

Yikes I came out to my LX-570 after work and a chip I hadn't noticed left a hairline "S" crack during the day. I called Safelite Autoglass and its $1,200 to replace the windshield because it can't be fixed. That's a lot for a windshield! I have Allstate and I sent an email to my agent to see if its covered.

Ouch. But I have heard others on here strongly recommend getting Lexus to replace the windshield, if you can get your insurer to agree to cover it since they will charge more than Safelite. Some have complained about problems with windshield noise and lack of proper sealing with non-Lexus windshields.

It is covered subject to the deductible. That's a relief, but doesn't explain why a windshield should cost that much. Seems ridiculously high.

My agent already suggested a couple non Lexus glass companies. I wonder how much more Lexus charges over a windshield company? I always assumed that Lexus dealers subbed the work out to glass companies because they are specialized in the work.

They are three layers of glass. With this design there is supposed to beless wind noise. But more fragile. I went through 4 of them with a 2008. My insurance rate went up. I was not a happy camper.

Insurance rates go up no matter what. I would go with the factory windshield as I have been told that the non-factory units are much more noisy.

Hi Denver

I had the same problem with a crack and hairline fracture which comes right in the driver viewpoint. My quote from the lexus dealership was $998.00 installed + tax.

Talked to my insurance agent about the cost of coverage for windshield after replacement and she said:

About an additional $400+ per year. With a $250 deductible (horrible coverage).

Ouch that is horrible! Lexus told me today that there are after market windshields for $800 and that they outsource to a glass company. They were kind enough to give me his name and number.

Initially I thought you were thinking the insurance quote was horrible! Which it was.

$998 was for Lexus OEM shipped up from CA to be installed. I thought this is expensive for a windshield, but it is a big one and aftermarket is shady in terms of fit and sound from what I have heard.

Based on some of the other quotes on this topic I was scared but quite happy with the rate.

Anyways, crack begone to all.

Here, in Chicago, a Lexus dealership quoted $1400 for the OEM windshield (taxes included).
