Default Rear Media Player Added - Under $50 (aka Make the Kids Happy Mod)

The rear seat entertainment center is cumbersome and with limited functionality, thanks to the inability to connect a USB drive or stick that will read movies, or give full selection control to the rear passengers. I found the following solution, for under $50, which works perfectly.

- Micca Speck G2 media player on Amazon:

. Alternatively, you can get the MDN player
LINK LINK
which is cheaper, comes with more cables and its own USB power supply

- a 5v 3.5mm USB barrel power supply (search amazon). Or you can carry an extension cable from the 110v outlet. Or buy the MDN player which comes with the USB power supply.

- Adhesive velcro tape.

These unit are very small and able to play multiple format video and audio, as well carry pictures. You can supply media via a USB thumbnail, USB drive, or SD card. Output is both HDMI and component (RCA) cable. They play up to 1080p, but if you set that output (device menu settings), it won't display on Lexus as it cannot handle more than NTSC or PAL (480i).

Kids now have over 50 movies to choose from, and 1000s of songs.

I simply velcro-attached the player to side of the driver seat, with the IR remote facing the rear seat. I also velcro attached the remote in the armrest, next to the Lexus remote (no rattling sound).

It is completely removable and good for road trips as you can easily connect this to a hotel TV.

Looks nice. An obvious improvement for the equipment.

I have the same media player, but I cannot get it to work with the hdmi port in the 2016 LX. I also tried the TRRS 4 pole cable (male to male), and all I heard was a humm noise from the speakers. If anyone has success with any other media player, please share.

For 2016 rear seat source, we use the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable which allows iPhone / iPad audio/video to be played on rear seat system via HDMI input.
Works great. Kids can play movies, video games, listen to music, etc. all while using the wireless rear headphones! Arguably, it is better to just look at the iPhone/iPad than the LX screens but...HDMI makes connectivity a breeze. I'm thinking about adding a NES Classic video game console with HDMI output and runs on USB power.

Unfortunately, I use Samsung android phone and tablets, but that does not work either through MHL to HDMI. It seems that the source has to be able to talk down to NTSC via HDMI. The manual says either 480p or 576p via HDMI.The Micca player has the setting for NTSC via HDMI, but it displays nothing even on auto setting. And it seems I cannot set it to NTSC via HDMI by default.

awesome mod - well worth the $50 even if the kids only use it a few times, rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it

Yeah.. the Apple TV could be a cool solution too. Please let us know how it goes. I wonder though if ATV storage would be adequate unless using 1st Generation (maybe 4th generation too?) ATV. The new 4th Generation ATV tends to like to download from the cloud which wont be possible on the road.... Second and Third Gen had very little on board storage and were intended mostly for streaming. Now that I think about it, it might be easier to just buy a used iPhone or iPad and get a 30 Pin Digital AV - HDMI adapter. Seems more portable & easier to manage. In my experience, ATV's can be a bit annoying to sync and can also be a bit flaky - since syncing requires a computer + a tv setup on the same network... The iphone can be synced directly from the computer - when attached - seems easier to me.

Anyone with a none Apple product to get this damn thing to work? I can't believe Lexus technology is this limiting.

Have tried different hdmi adapters with the pixel 4xl but cannot see any video. Just a blank screen. Any suggestions are welcome. Just upgraded from a gx to the lx. Since it's used ended up with this package

I use this and have zero problems - download lots of content to my phone or iPad for those areas where cell reception is not great. You can use any streaming/download service for movies or shows. In the past I had a Samsung Note, but had issues with adapters being able to work. I never found a viable solution.

Thanks ...the samsung tab s mirrors the screen with hdmi. Pixel 4xldoes not work. The resolution of the mirrored screen is pathetic. Am going to remove the rear screen and add the cover from tera. The entertainment system and the joystick are annoying. .
