Default How change spark plugs 2001 LX470?

I removed the plastic manifold cover but I cannot figure out how to remove the coils/plugs. Does the manifold that sits under the plastic cover have to be removed? And it looks like a long fluted tube that sits on top of and runs from front to rear coil. That have to be removed too? Appears to be a formidable job? Anybody help?

And where would I spray throttle body cleaner? Is throttle body under the manifold?

I looked through the forum but do not see the 2001 LX addressed for changing plugs. thanks so much.

I have a 2005 so you may have some differences.....

When you take the cover off you will see the 4 coils on each side of the engine. They are each held on with 1 torx or allen bolt. Mark each coil and connector with its corresponding cylinder #. Disconnect the electrical connector; be gentle, heat and age make them brittle. Lift the coil up. Be careful not to lose the seal between the coil and the valve cover. You cannot buy them separate from the coil and the aftermarket seals suck. Remove the plugs (if you have pressurized air, loosen the plug 2 or 3 turns and then blow air down into the hole to get any junk out, then remove the plug (magnet helps). Use anti-seize on the plug THREADS ONLY and reinstall them. Torque them (I used 15-18 ft lbs because I didn't know the required value). Coat the inside 1/4" of the coil with silicone grease to lube and seal it from moisture (I use a Q Tip to coat it). Don't forget to re-install the coil seal when you install the coil.

I believe #4 coil has some components in the way. Loosen the screws and move the components to make room. Its snug but it will come out. Just be wary of the oil seal at removal and install. They are very light and easily lost.

Removing the coils will take you about 15 minutes at a casual pace.

Throttle body attaches to the manifold. Your air box will have a tube that connect to the throttle body. Personally I would remove it to clean it (need gaskets). I'm not a big fan of cleaning by sparing junk into the engine. Make sure you use throttle body cleaner that is MAF safe

thanks so much; just to be clear, does your '05 have the aluminum(?) manifold under the plastic cover? And if it does, you do not have to remove the manifold on your '05 to get to the coil/plugs, right?
thanks.

the 05 has an aluminum plenum under the cover. Its a large plenum manifold.. Nothing has to be removed other than the engine cover and the loosening of the components at the back of the engine on the drivers side. If you have take the cover off, Look at the valve covers. You will see 4 black coil packs with connectors plugged into them. They are maybe 2 inches across with a bolt holding it down.
