Default Test Drove a 2004 LX, Issues with 4LO and Center-Difflock

Hi guys!

I just recently test drove a 2005 LX470 with 46,000 miles. The drive went smooth and I asked the dealer if I could test 4LO and the center-difflock.

So I shifted the main transmission from "Drive" to "Neutral", then I preceeded. to move the 4WD shifter from "H" to "N" and then to "L". The shift from "H" to "N" went smooth, but from "N" to "L" there was grinding and it didn't seem engaged. There were no dash lights on that indicated "L" was activated. Also, I tested the center-difflock by pushing the button, but again, nothing showed up on the dash. I also didn't feel anything. This was also on Neutral.

Would this seem like an expensive fix? I would hate to walk away from a 2005 LX with this low mileage.

I don't remember the exact procedure for shifting into the low range, but if you were rolling at all I think you would get some grinding. If you try it again, place it in low and then put the truck in "drive" and try to drive it. You will instantly know if it's engaged in low range. Also, there is a chance the differential lock button hasn't been pushed in years---if at all. Try it a few times before you give up on it. It may also be stickly disengaging from the "lock" position which may require backing-up and turning slightly to disengage it. When it is engaged, you will get the little lock icon on the dash plus the stability control and I think one other light that escapes me at the moment.
