Default 90,000 service. Should I change water pump with timing belt change?

I am at 90k and I seem to remember a recommendation to do both since the labor is the major expense and water pumps tend to fail around 120k mile. Is this what folks here would do?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave, we owned a LX470. At 90k we did not change the pump, when we sold it to my brother, he took the vehicle to 200k and changed it at that point.

I guess it would matter if the LX you have is very old or is it a newer 06 or 07 model?

If it is a 2006 model, I would not do it. I have not heard of the pumps failing that often.

2006 is not that old and the 4.7 was never designed to have the water pump changed as regular service.

You should check out what the GX470 people have to say. Same engine.

We did ours during the 90k service. Also, make we negotiated in a repack of the front bearings, fuel filter, and spark plugs. Not necessarily due, but got it all done at once, 99k miles. 2004.

I would certainly do it. Though they are not known for failure at 90k you are already doing most of the labor with the TB. Do it.

I would do the water pump at the same time. It makes sense based on the labor costs to get back in to do it

My wifes 2006 LX water pump started leaking at 77K. We had them do the timing belt while they were in there.

I would recommend having it done when timing belt is done as well. Think of it this way... You don't have a crystal ball telling you how long the water pump will last...

Once the timing belt is changed at 90k, you have another 90k miles until service recommends doing another belt...

If the water pump fails before then, you're looking at paying labor a second time to replace the pump...

Few extra dollars, good chance of saving money in the long run.

Default Timing belt

I'm sorry for this late post. I keep my oil changed and coolant clean since I bought my 2000 LX470 in 2003. I just had my Timing Belt, Coolant, Water Pump, Themostat, Upper & Lower Hoses changed at over 200K miles I have 225k or 245k NOW. This is 1st time the T Belt been changed and it didn't look that bad at all. Just my 2cents and I drive it hard by my fluids stays clean.

We have an 01 LX470, and just did the timing belt/water pump at 130,000 miles. We are getting ready to sell, and wanted reassurance to the new owners. Belt was not that worn, no problems with the pump. Parts $180, labor = free.

Default 90K service for 2004 LX 470

I just had my 90k service done on my 2004 LX 470 and while the timing belt was being replaced they noticed that there was slight leakage from the water pump. Although it was not heavy leakage, I went ahead and had them replace it.

I did mine at 90K during the t-belt service for peace of mind. Bearings were still pretty smooth, but not like-new. The water pump should last at least 120K mi before it starts to weep. You can run it longer, but bearings will be rough. When I replaced the water pump on my old 22re engine at 125K mi, the bearings were toast..very rough.

Default My experience

I had a 99 LX470. Had my water pump replaced by the Pohanka Lexus dealer at the same time of the TB as it made sense in terms of labor at ~ 90k.

13 months later the water pump failed. Had to go back in and replace the pump. 6.5 hours labor. They said the timing belt would also need to be replaced because it most likely was contaminated with coolant. $1225 to repair. Pohanka Lexus said they do not provide a warranty on replacement parts after 1 year. Pretty pathetic.

What brought me here is my 2007 LX470 is due for the 90k service. I'm really hesitant to replace the water pump based on my previous experience but also realize the chances of the water pump failing at 13 months or 17k miles is pretty slim.

i would change it....almost the same labor and the water pump itself is cheap....otherwise it's a gamble...you might get lucky and it lasts.....but most likely it will fail. Quick and easy piece of mind while you are already there having the timing blet changed.

Quick Reply: 90,000 service. Should I change water pump with timing belt change?
